The Benue State Police Command has recovered a newborn baby allegedly taken from his mother at a healthcare facility in Gboko, with suspects arrested in connection with the incident.
The Police Public Relations Officer of the command, DSP Peter Aondona, confirmed the recovery to journalists on Thursday, saying the baby was found in the early hours of the day.
Aondona said the incident was initially reported at the A Division Police Station in Gboko before the case was transferred to the Criminal Investigation Department for further investigation.
“Yesterday (Wednesday) in the midnight, we recovered the baby and the baby is at the division now,” Aondona said.
He added that the police had arrested suspects in connection with the incident, but said the exact number would be disclosed later.
The newborn boy was reportedly delivered on Tuesday, August 11, at a healthcare facility in Gboko. According to reports, he was taken from his mother a few hours after birth.
Reports said the baby initially did not cry after delivery, prompting a nurse to intervene and stabilise him. The mother and child were subsequently moved to a ward.
A woman who allegedly presented herself as a nurse was said to have approached the mother and requested to examine the baby. The mother reportedly handed the child to her, believing she was a member of the hospital staff.
The woman allegedly took the baby towards the labour room, after which the family discovered that the child was missing. The incident reportedly caused tension at the facility and led to the deployment of security personnel.
The police have not disclosed the identities or total number of suspects arrested, while investigations into the circumstances surrounding the baby’s disappearance are ongoing.
The recovered baby has since been reunited with his mother.
