Benue SEMA issues snakebite alert, warns residents to take precautions

Daily Post about 3 hours 1 mins read

The Benue State Emergency Management Agency, Benue SEMA, has called on residents across the state to remain vigilant against snake bites as the rainy season progresses.

The agency issued the warning following the treatment of several snakebite victims at the Benue State University Teaching Hospital, BSUTH, noting that the risk extends beyond Internally Displaced Persons, IDP, camps and can affect anyone.

According to Benue SEMA, snakes tend to become more active during the rainy season, increasing the likelihood of encounters with residents, particularly those living in rural communities and farming areas.

The agency advised residents to keep their surroundings clean and free of bushes, exercise caution while using village roads, farms, and bush paths, and wear protective footwear during farming activities.

It also urged people to use flashlights when moving around at night and to seek immediate medical attention in the event of a snake bite.

Benue SEMA emphasized the need for collective vigilance to protect families and communities, stressing that maintaining clean environments can significantly reduce the risk of snake encounters.

It advised residents requiring assistance or additional information to contact the agency.
