KAMPALA — Vice President Maj. (Rtd) Jessica Alupo has announced a major financial boost for Uganda’s healthcare system after the country secured a $25 million (approx. UGX 92 billion) grant from the international Pandemic Fund.
The breakthrough development was officially communicated by the Africa CDC Director General, Dr. Jean Kaseya, during a high-level briefing chaired by Vice President Alupo on behalf of President Yoweri Museveni.
Writing on her official social media handle on X, Vice President Alupo hailed the financial injection as “wonderful news” for the country’s public health infrastructure.
New Continental Leadership Roles for Ugandan Doctors
Alongside the multi-million-dollar funding, the meeting confirmed key continental governance appointments for two of Uganda’s prominent medical professionals:
Dr. Chris Baryomunsi: The Minister for Health—a seasoned physician who assumed the health portfolio in June 2026—will join the Africa CDC Governing Board as a member and Chair. His appointment gives Uganda a primary steering seat in continental decisions regarding disease surveillance, laboratory capacity, emergency response, and continental health resource allocation.
Dr. Henry Kyobe Bosa: The Makerere-trained medical doctor and renowned epidemiologist has been appointed as the new Africa CDC Director for Uganda.
Dr. Kyobe, who previously served as the National Incident Commander during Uganda’s Ebola and COVID-19 responses, brings extensive operational experience to the continental body’s country leadership.
Why the $25 Million Grant Matters to Ugandans
The $25 million grant comes at a critical time as Uganda continues to fortify its public health capabilities following the 2026 Bundibugyo Ebola outbreak.
While the Pandemic Fund previously mobilized regional emergency funding, this dedicated $25 million allocation is directly earmarked to strengthen Uganda’s internal health sector.
For the everyday Ugandan, the funds are expected to yield tangible upgrades in:
Outbreak Detection & Surveillance: Faster tracking and containment of viral threats including Ebola, Mpox, and yellow fever.
Laboratory Capacity: Equipping regional public health labs for quicker specimen turnaround times.
Frontline Health Worker Support: Targeted training and emergency response equipment for medical personnel nationwide.
Direct Execution via Africa CDC
The strategic alignment is further strengthened by Africa CDC’s recent accreditation as a Pandemic Fund Implementing Entity. This milestone allows the continental health body to channel and manage financing directly to national projects without third-party institutional bottlenecks.
Alupo concluded her announcement by expressing gratitude for the development and noting that the official briefing took place strictly under the guidance of President Museveni.
Detailed implementation breakdowns and disbursement schedules are expected to be released jointly by the Ministry of Health and Africa CDC in the coming weeks.
