defence minister issued stunning public criticism of the army’s top commander on Thursday, forcing President Volodymyr Zelensky to call for unity to halt signs of an emerging split in the military top ranks.\u003C\u002Fem>\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fp>\u003Cp>Large protests erupted in several Ukrainian cities on Thursday against the removal of popular defence minister Mykhailo Fedorov, who had been brought in six months ago to digitise and modernise an army fatigued after four years fighting off the Russian invasion.\u003C\u002Fp>\u003Cp>Following Fedorov’s removal, Zelensky announced Thursday he had appointed Yevgeniy Khmara — head of Ukraine’s SBU security service — as acting defence minister.\u003C\u002Fp>\u003Cp>“Khmara has gained extensive and, in many respects, unprecedented experience with technological combat operations,” Zelensky said in a Facebook post.\u003C\u002Fp>\u003Cp>The spiralling leadership row risks throwing uncertainty on the war effort at a time when Ukraine was in one of its best positions for months.\u003C\u002Fp>\u003Cp>Kyiv’s troops have largely halted the pace of Russia’s advance while pounding Russian oil and military sites with long-range drones, triggering a nationwide fuel crisis inside its neighbour.\u003C\u002Fp>\u003Cp>After being forced to resign, Fedorov on Thursday accused Ukraine’s commander-in-chief Oleksandr Syrsky of dividing the country.\u003C\u002Fp>\u003Cp>“Instead of figuring out how to defeat Russia asymmetrically — which is the commander-in-chief’s task — he figured out how to split the country,” Fedorov told reporters, including AFP.\u003C\u002Fp>\u003Cp>He criticised slow bureaucracy and a lack of flexibility, questioning whether Ukraine could defeat Russia with Syrsky in charge of the army.\u003C\u002Fp>\u003Cp>“In this configuration, I personally don’t know how to win the war,” he said, wearing his trademark jeans and dark T-shirt, speaking in front of a large screen showing drones.\u003C\u002Fp>\u003Cp>He also alleged Syrsky had engineered his removal through an ultimatum issued to Zelensky after months of clashes.\u003C\u002Fp>\u003Cp>Zelensky himself issued a plea for “unity” and said the two sides — the defence ministry and the army command — were barely on speaking terms.\u003C\u002Fp>\u003Cp>“A president in wartime should not have to choose in such a situation, honestly,” he said, speaking alongside UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer in Kyiv.\u003C\u002Fp>\u003Cp>“I would very much like unity.”\u003C\u002Fp>\u003Ch2>‘New rules’\u003C\u002Fh2>\u003Cp>A soldier serving in Ukraine’s army told AFP the political chaos in Kyiv could hit the war effort.\u003C\u002Fp>\u003Cp>“For some, replacing a minister is merely a political reshuffle. For us, it can determine whether a needed drone arrives on time, whether essential equipment is purchased,” they said, asking to speak anonymously to criticise the decision.\u003C\u002Fp>\u003Cp>In a public statement, Syrsky tried to stem the criticism, defending his results and calling to “focus on the war”.\u003C\u002Fp>\u003Cp>But one of his most senior commanders — a rumoured possible successor — came to Fedorov’s defence and called for the pace of reform to continue.\u003C\u002Fp>\u003Cp>Joint Forces Commander Mykhailo Drapaty said the army “needs change” and “new rules” as he thanked Fedorov for “not being afraid to tackle issues”.\u003C\u002Fp>\u003Cp>In Kyiv, AFP reporters saw more than a thousand people gathered on a central square, singing Ukraine’s national anthem, waving Ukrainian and European Union flags and chanting “shame” and “bring Fedorov back”.\u003C\u002Fp>\u003Cp>Analysts said Zelensky had backed his trusted army chief over an outsider defence minister at a key moment of the war.\u003C\u002Fp>\u003Cp>Fedorov’s backers cast the removal as retribution for trying to shake up the system and weeding out graft.\u003C\u002Fp>\u003Cp>“He fell out with various generals and with different drone suppliers. In other words, he really did start implementing many useful reforms that threatened certain vested interests,” said political analyst Anatoliy Oktysiuk.\u003C\u002Fp>\u003Cp>He added that Zelensky had “undermined himself politically” by moving against Fedorov.\u003C\u002Fp>\u003Cp>The deputy commander of Ukraine’s air force, Pavlo Yelizarov, resigned in protest.\u003C\u002Fp>\u003Cp>And some criticising the Ukrainian leader as being “afraid of effective people”.\u003C\u002Fp>\u003Cp>Under Fedorov, Ukraine significantly increased soldiers’ salaries and outlined plans to allow for phased His presence among our grieving people is a meaningful gesture and it has been noted by the Idoma Nation,” the letter said.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>The association, however, stressed that sympathy alone was insufficient.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>“Our people need more than condolence. They need the security architecture of the State deployed to ensure they never again receive their Governor in mourning.”\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Among its demands, the association urged President Tinubu to immediately deploy military and other security personnel to neutralise armed groups operating in the forests of Benue South, order a thorough investigation into the recurring massacres, ensure the arrest and prosecution of all perpetrators, investigate why intelligence supplied by the traditional institution was allegedly ignored, establish permanent security outposts in vulnerable communities, and provide humanitarian relief, medical care and compensation for victims and affected families.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Appealing directly to the President, the association maintained that although the Idoma people had remained peaceful despite years of repeated attacks, their restraint should never be mistaken for weakness.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>“We have shown restraint in the face of sustained provocation, but our patience must not be mistaken for weakness, and our blood is not worthless,” the letter stated.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>It added: “We seek justice, we seek protection, we seek to live in peace on the land of our ancestors. Nigerian Army, disclosed this in a statement.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>According to the statement, troops of the battalion, in conjunction with members of the Vigilante Group, raided a secluded fenced compound at Imokun in the Odo-Noforija\u002FPoka axis of Epe and arrested the 24 foreign nationals.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>“During the operation, 24 foreign nationals comprising 15 males and nine females were apprehended,” it said.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>The statement said preliminary profiling revealed that the suspects are nationals of various West and Central African countries, comprising 10 Cameroonians, six Togolese, three Ivorians, three nationals of the Republic of Benin, one Burkinabè and one Guinea-Bissau national.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>It said initial investigations were conducted to ascertain the suspects’ immigration status, purpose of stay and possible involvement in any unlawful activities.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>“Efforts are also underway to identify and question the owner of the premises to provide further insight into the circumstances surrounding their residence and activities at the location,” it said.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>The statement added that the suspects were handed over to the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS), Lagos State Command, on July 16, 2025, for further investigation, profiling and necessary administrative action in accordance with extant immigration laws and regulations.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>The General Officer Commanding (GOC), 81 Division Nigerian Army, Major General Adebayo Babalola, charged personnel to sustain the ongoing operations and intensify efforts aimed at denying criminal elements, illegal immigrants and other security threats access to
