Hundreds of movie lovers are trooping into the Tafawa Balewa Square (TBS) in Lagos as the Nollywood crime thriller, Black Market, attempts to set a Guinness World Record for the largest audience at a film screening in a single location.
The screening is scheduled to take place tonight, with organisers targeting an audience of 50,000 people.
Long queues were already visible at the venue shortly after the gates opened at about 2pm, with more movie lovers continuing to arrive ahead of the screening.
The event is being staged as the premiere of Black Market and as an attempt to surpass the existing Guinness World Records benchmark for the largest number of people to watch a film in one location.
Reports ahead of the event put the existing record at 43,624 people, set in 2015 during a screening of the Filipino film Felix Manalo at the Philippine Arena.
The organisers’ official website says the goal is to bring 50,000 Nigerians together for one simultaneous screening at TBS.
The organisers had earlier announced that the gates would open at 2pm, with the film scheduled for screening from 7pm to 8:30pm.
Black Market is directed by Fatimah Binta Gimsay and produced by Nora Awolowo, with Omowunmi Dada and Nicole Ofoegbu among the production team.
The film stars Dada alongside Lateef Adedimeji, Linda Ejiofor-Suleiman, Scarlet Gomez, Teniola Aladese, Susan Pwajok, Ibrahim Yekini, also known as Itele D Icon, and Uzor Arukwe, among others.
The crime thriller follows five market women involved in a cross-border smuggling operation amid fuel scarcity and economic pressure. The plot takes a dramatic turn after the daughter of one of the women is kidnapped.
The event is being supported by the Lagos State Government through the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture, with several corporate partners also involved.
As the crowd continues to build at TBS, the outcome of the Guinness World Records attempt will depend on the attendance and verification process required by the record body.
