Blessing CEO Breaks Down In Tears, Apologises To Nigerians For Past Remarks After Son’s Death

Social media personality Blessing CEO has broken down in tears in a video apologising to Nigerians for past remarks, weeks after being released on bail and months after losing her young son while she was in custody.

In the video posted on her Instagram page on Tuesday, the influencer, whose real name is Nkiru Blessing Okoro, said she recorded herself alone in a parked car because she did not want her mother to see her in distress. Her fiancé, businessman IVD, also posted a separate message asking his family, friends and business partners for forgiveness.

“I am so sorry for speaking about the pain I have never felt carelessly,” she said, admitting that her words alone were not enough to show remorse. “I’m so broken at this point. So broken that I’m losing myself,” she added.

Blessing CEO said she and her mother had been hiding their tears from each other, and that she broke down after seeing her mother cry that morning. She also compared herself to the prodigal son, saying she was ready to change course and “correct every wrong” to make her late son proud.

Her son, Bryan, reportedly nine years old, died in June of an asthma attack while she was remanded at the Kirikiri Correctional Centre in Lagos over alleged fraud. She said she was unable to meet her bail conditions at the time and was therefore not with him when he died. “I’m sorry I wasn’t there. I’m sorry I came late,” she said, speaking to her son.

The apology follows heavy criticism of her earlier comments on domestic violence and on the death of IVD’s late wife, Bimbo Ogbonna, which many Nigerians said showed little empathy. IVD was previously cleared in the case.

She was granted bail in late October and is still facing separate fraud cases, including an alleged ₦69m property fraud, for which she was arraigned. She has been asked to prove the sincerity of her remorse by her actions, and she said she plans to collect her son’s school bag, uniform and books and honour his memory.
