The State Security Adviser and the leadership of the 12 Brigade and the 21 Battalion of the Nigerian Army, the DSS, the Police and local security operatives stormed the forest to ensure the victims were rescued.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>‎”Just this evening, while inspecting the Armoured Personnel Carriers procured by the Kogi State Government to strengthen the fight against criminality, the Governor assured newsmen that every effort was being made to secure the release of the victims.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>‎”A few hours later, the victims regained their freedom. The sustained pressure on the kidnappers and the saturation of the forest by heavily armed security personnel forced the criminals to abandon the victims and flee.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>‎”Security operatives remain in the forest and the operation is still ongoing. We are determined to ensure that none of the criminals escapes justice. Our resolve is clear: anyone who chooses the path of crime in Kogi State will face the full weight of the law.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>‎”We can confirm that the School Principal, the NECO official and the two students have all been rescued safely. They are hale and hearty and are currently with security agencies for debriefing and necessary medical checks.”\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>‎Fanwo commended the gallantry and professionalism of the officers and men of the Nigerian Army, the DSS, the Police, local security operatives and all other agencies involved in the rescue mission, describing their swift response as another testament to the effectiveness of inter-agency collaboration in the fight against insecurity.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>‎The Commissioner also expressed the appreciation of the Kogi State Government to President Bola Tinubu for his steadfast support for the state’s security efforts.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>‎”The President directed the heads of the security agencies to give Kogi every necessary support to rescue the victims. Students, NANS, has warned the management of Federal University, Wukari, Taraba State against sending students away from the campus or stopping them from registering for academic activities because of inability to pay tuition fees, saying that would amount to being insensitive to the plight of the students.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>\u003Cbr>The association, in a statement by the National President, Akinteye Babatunde Afeez, said the fact that the students are awaiting the payment of their tuition fees by the Nigerian Education Loan Fund, NELFund, should be enough for the school to exercise caution.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>\u003Cbr>This is just as the association warned that anti-student policies would not be allowed to thrive in the university.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>\u003Cbr>“The national leadership of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has received with great discontent and strong resentment, the position of the management of the Federal University, Wukari, directing students who are unable to pay their school fees to defer their semester or academic session, while further warning that failure to either pay tuition fees or formally secure approval for deferment would result in the forfeiture of both the semester and the entire academic session.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>\u003Cbr>“The management also stated that students who defer without approval or absent themselves without an approved deferment would be barred from registering for the next academic session. We strongly decry this position, as it is insensitive, anti-student, and contrary to the ideals of accessible and inclusive education.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>\u003Cbr>“Humanity must always precede our personal dispositions in the management of institutions. This decision is cruelty in its purest form. At a time when the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, has introduced the NELFUND initiative to make education accessible to ordinary Nigerians and every young Nigerian who aspires to pursue higher education, it is disheartening that the Vice-Chancellor of Federal University, Wukari is the very one frustrating students and keeping them out of school because of financial challenges that the initiative was designed to address.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>\u003Cbr>“As the apex leadership of Nigerian students, we strongly condemn the position of the management of Federal University, Wukari for adopting a stance that is not student-friendly. This is a direct attack on Nigerian students and the education sector at large.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>\u003Cbr>“It is on record that many of these students have already applied for NELFUND, which means the management will receive the tuition fees as soon as NELFUND disburses the funds. It is therefore inhumane for the Vice-Chancellor and the entire management of the institution to deny students the opportunity to write their examinations despite the assurance that NELFUND will certainly disburse the funds in due course.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>\u003Cbr>“It is also on record that even when many students go out of their way to pay their fees before NELFUND disbursements, several institutions fail to refund them promptly. It was only recently, following sustained pressure from the leadership of NANS, that many of these institutions began processing refunds.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>\u003Cbr>“According to reports available to us, over 5,000 students have been affected by this decision. \u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Considering the sheer number of students involved and the willingness of the Vice-Chancellor to deny them access to education, it is evident that his policies are anti-student. More importantly, his actions undermine the very essence of the NELFUND initiative of the President Tinubu whose vision is to ensure that every deserving Nigerian, regardless of financial circumstances, has access to quality education.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>\u003Cbr>“Let it be unequivocally stated that there is no circumstance under which the leadership of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) will fold its arms and watch over 5,000 students be denied the opportunity to sit for their examinations on account of late registration, despite having secured funding for their tuition through NELFUND.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>\u003Cbr>“Our position, as the apex leadership of Nigerian students, is clear and unambiguous: if these students are not allowed to complete their registration and sit for their examinations, then the examinations should not proceed for anyone.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>\u003Cbr>“We shall continue to resist every policy and action that is detrimental to the interests and welfare of Nigerian students. They later returned, shooting indiscriminately, forcing everyone to flee for safety,” he said.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>According to residents, it was only after the gunfire subsided that they discovered the school had been attacked.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>“We initially did not know what the gunmen were after. After the shooting stopped, some of us went to the school and found examination papers scattered across classrooms and the school premises. There were no students or school officials in sight,” another resident said.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>The victims were later identified as the school principal, Mr. Nyada Daniel; the NECO exams supervisor, Mr. Solomon Audu; and four students.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Residents noted that the number of abducted students could have been higher but for the fact that only a limited number of candidates were writing Literature in English at the time, unlike core subjects such as English Language and Mathematics, which attract larger attendance.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>The kidnappers were also said to have contacted some relatives of the victims on Tuesday evening, demanding ransom for their release.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>“At least four families have received calls from the abductors demanding huge sums of money for the victims’ freedom,” Alkali alleged.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Following the incident, soldiers, police officers, local vigilantes and hunters were  said to have been mobilised to the area to track the abductors and rescue the victims.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>“Soldiers, policemen, vigilantes and hunters are combing the surrounding forests in search of the kidnappers,” a resident, who requested anonymity, said.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>\u003Cstrong>One student rescued — Police\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Confirming the attack yesterday, Kogi State Police Command said it had launched a rescue operation, following the abduction.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>The state Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Saliu Oyiza Afusat,  said the incident occurred while 10 candidates were reportedly writing the ongoing NECO examination at the abandoned school.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp> “Following the attack, Kogi State Commissioner of Police, CP Naziru Kankarofi deployed tactical and operational teams to the area. \u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>‘’The police chief also visited the scene alongside the Commander of the 12 Brigade, Nigerian Army, Lokoja, Brig-Gen. Advanced technology is also being deployed to support the rescue operation,’’ the government stated.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\u003Cp> It further disclosed that preliminary findings indicated that the examination centre, located in a remote area, was allegedly being used as a “miracle centre” for external candidates\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp> According to the statement, the two female candidates involved were not regular students of Government Secondary School, Olowa, while the examination arrangements did not conform with the security framework put in place by the state government for candidates participating in the ongoing NECO examinations.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp> The government, however, maintained that the circumstances surrounding the examination centre would not affect its responsibility to ensure the safety of all residents and visitors in the state.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp> It assured that every effort was being made to rescue the victims and apprehend those behind the abduction.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp> The government appealed to residents of Olowa and neighbouring communities to cooperate with security agencies by providing credible information that could aid the rescue efforts.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp> It reaffirmed its commitment to protecting lives and property, expressing confidence that the victims would be safely reunited with their families.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>\u003Cstrong>It’s time to make Safe Schools Initiative work – NAPTAN, NUT\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Speaking on the incident yesterday, the Chairman , Board of Trustees of the National Parent Teacher Association of Nigeria, NAPTAN, Chief Deolu Ogunbanjo, advocated the implementation of the state school policy in the country.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>“We know that security is an issue that concerns all of us. Community leaders and even residents should also assist in providing information to assist security agencies. Also, the Safe Schools Initiative must be made to work. It was launched in the aftermath of the Chibok girls saga in. 2014 and it has been back and forth regarding proper implementation of the policy.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>\u003Cstrong>“All schools should be fenced and manned by armed\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp> persons, not just keeping a gateman to close and open the gate. The police and Civil Defence Corps have a great role to play and they must be deployed in and around our schools. School environment must be safe and conducive for teaching and learning. These repeated cases of attacks on schools must be stopped. We must not give in to terror,” he stated.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Also, the Nigeria Union of Teachers, NUT, strongly called for full implementation of the Safe Schools Initiative. \u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>NUT President, Titus Amba, who made the call, urged  government to deploy adequate security personnel, establish modern surveillance systems, and create rapid emergency response systems in vulnerable regions.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>“The initiative is critical to preventing further attacks by terrorists and bandits. There must be nationwide implementation, full enforcement and strengthening of the Safe Schools Declaration across all states to protect educational institutions from violence.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>“There must be urgent deployment of adequate security personnel and modern surveillance systems to vulnerable schools, especially in high-risk areas. There must be emphasis on improved intelligence gathering and robust community-based security mechanisms. Also, there must be provision of proper psycho-social support and rehabilitation services for teachers and students who have suffered the trauma of abduction,” he noted.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>The Safe Schools Initiative was conceived in the aftermath of the 2014 Chibok schoolgirls’ abduction, when Boko Haram’s war on education shocked the world and exposed the vulnerability of Nigerian schools. \u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>The federal government, working with private sector leaders and development partners, launched the scheme with N20bilion to improve school protection, establish early warning systems, perimeter fencing and emergency response. \u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>In 2023, the federal government unveiled a N144.8 billion financing plan for the 2023–2026 period, meant to be implemented with federal, state and partner participation.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>However, school abductions have not ended; they have intensified and spread from the North-East to the North-West and now to the South-West, President Bola Tinubu’s own geopolitical zone. \u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Insecurity around schools has become normalised, with children, teachers and parents living under constant fear. Yet this has become the grim reality under a government that has normalised insecurity.”\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Atiku said the latest attack was not an isolated tragedy but part of a dangerous national pattern in which educational institutions had become preferred targets because criminals no longer feared the Nigerian state.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>“It is impossible to separate this attack from the attitude this administration has displayed towards education. \u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>‘’A government that has repeatedly made education more expensive through unprecedented increases in WAEC and NECO examination fees, neglected public schools, failed to secure learning environments and reduced education to empty campaign slogans should not be surprised that criminals now see schools as abandoned territories,” he said.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>He said government policies had sent one unmistakable message, that education is no longer a national priority. \u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>“First, they priced poor children out of classrooms. Then they fail to protect those who remain in school. This is a double assault on the future of Nigeria. One is economic exclusion; the other is violent intimidation. \u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>‘’Together, they amount to a systematic destruction of the dreams of an entire generation,” he said.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Atiku linked the security failure to what he described as reckless federal budgeting, saying the repeated incompetence Nigerians continued to witness under the Tinubu administration was the inevitable consequence of a government that has abandoned probity, discipline and accountability in public finance.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>He noted that every successful attack on a school emboldened other criminal groups, making educational institutions increasingly attractive targets because the consequences had been minimal and the response largely reactive.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>“The collapse of school security is not merely a security failure; it is a collapse of governance itself.
