Leaders of the 11 BRICS member states have agreed on a joint declaration condemning unilateral military action and unprovoked aggression without naming any specific country.
The declaration also calls for regional stability, the protection of civilians and critical infrastructure, and opposition to the use or threat of force. It further supports dialogue, diplomacy and freedom of navigation.
The consensus was reached on Saturday after intensive negotiations during a closed-door session of the BRICS core member states, marking the beginning of the 2026 BRICS Summit at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi, India.
The declaration comes amid heightened tensions in the Middle East, with BRICS members seeking to promote dialogue and de-escalation in the region.
The two-day summit, holding from September 12 to 13, is themed “Building for Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Sustainability.” It brings together Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, Egypt, Ethiopia, Indonesia, Iran and the United Arab Emirates, alongside partner countries and invited international organisations.
The leaders are also discussing peace, trade, energy, global cooperation and the protection of international supply chains amid conflicts and geopolitical tensions around the world.
BRICS members are calling for peace and restraint in the Middle East while seeking to strengthen the voice of developing countries in major international financial institutions, including the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank.
Nigeria is participating in the summit as a BRICS partner country, with Vice President Kashim Shettima representing the country.
Shettima is expected to use the summit to seek opportunities for investment and economic cooperation, particularly in agriculture, technology and other non-oil sectors.
