LAGOS — The Bible Society of Nigeria (BSN) has donated food items, clothing, educational materials and Bibles to Oke Igbala Ayo Spiritual Church of Christ (Cherubim and Seraphim) in Lagos as part of efforts to support vulnerable Nigerians amid prevailing economic challenges.
The donation, made under the society’s Macedonian Call humanitarian initiative, is aimed at addressing the physical needs of vulnerable people alongside their spiritual well-being.
Speaking during the presentation, BSN Deputy Manager of Research, Literacy and Programmes, Mr Temitope Omogbemi, said the initiative reflected the society’s recognition that meeting people’s basic needs was important alongside its mission of translating and distributing the Bible.
Omogbemi explained that the Macedonian Call programme provides relief materials, Bibles and clothing to needy persons, including internally displaced persons in northern Nigeria.
He called on well-meaning Nigerians to support the initiative, describing it as a non-political and interdenominational programme that serves people irrespective of their religious affiliations.
Receiving the items, the Primate and Spiritual Head of the church, Rev. Apostle Femi Akinnubi, commended the BSN for extending its humanitarian activities beyond Bible distribution to include food and other essential supplies.
Akinnubi described the intervention as timely, particularly as the church prepared to celebrate its anniversary with the theme, “Divine Invitation,” which focuses on giving back to the community.
“I commend the Bible Society because I am used to seeing it buy and distribute Bibles, but this is my first time seeing this kind of support extended to food items,” he said.
“Even when Jesus was ministering, beyond healing, He also fed the people. Spiritual food is important, but physical support is equally necessary.”
Also expressing appreciation, Apostolic Evangelist Oluwatoyin Karimu said the donated items, which included bags of rice, groundnut oil, school bags, books and cartons of Bibles, would benefit both church members and non-members.
Another beneficiary, Brother Segun Taiwo, described the donation as “God in action,” noting that it aligned with the church’s anniversary plans to reach out to people in its immediate community.
