KAMPALA — Businessman and insurance broker Tejas Patel has been released on bail by the Makindye Magistrate’s Court in a high-profile case involving 15 counts of alleged aggravated human trafficking.
The court granted Patel a cash bail of Shs7 million, while his sureties were each bonded at a non-cash amount of Shs100 million. As part of the strict conditions for his release, Patel is barred from traveling outside Uganda, and his passport has been retained by the state. He is scheduled to return to court on November 9, 2026.
The Charges and Allegations
The bail decision follows an amended charge sheet brought by prosecutors, citing 15 counts of aggravated trafficking in persons against Patel and his co-accused, Yogesh Yadav.
According to state prosecutors, Patel and Yadav—along with other suspects still at large—allegedly recruited, transported, harbored, or received 15 individuals in Kampala’s Muyenga neighborhood between February and September 2026.
The prosecution asserts that the operation involved deception and payments aimed at securing consent for purposes of prostitution or sexual exploitation.
Both Patel and Yadav maintain their constitutional presumption of innocence as legal proceedings continue. Yadav had earlier been granted bail in connection with the same charges.
Government and Public Scrutiny
The case has drawn sharp attention from government bodies, notably the Ministry of Gender, Labour and Social Development. Mariam Amoit, a labour attaché at the ministry, stated that officials are closely monitoring the proceedings to ensure justice is delivered.
Amoit emphasized the critical need for accountability, warning the public against unlawful recruitment networks and urging jobseekers to pursue employment strictly through licensed, authorized channels to avoid falling prey to exploitation.
While the granting of bail allows the accused to remain out of custody pending trial, legal experts note that it does not constitute an acquittal. The case returns to the Makindye Magistrate’s Court next month as the judicial process moves forward.
