Canada raises alert, warns visa applicants against 4 fraud signs

Vanguard Nigeria about 3 hours 3 mins read

Nigerians planning to travel, study, work or relocate to Canada have been warned to watch out for common signs of visa fraud and scams during the application process.

Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) recently highlighted several warning signs applicants should be aware of when dealing with individuals or organisations claiming to offer Canadian immigration services.

The warning comes as scammers continue to target prospective immigrants with promises of guaranteed visas, fake documents and requests for personal or financial information.

Here are four red flags applicants should watch out for when applying for a Canadian visa:

1. Someone claiming to be from IRCC contacts you on social media

Applicants should be cautious if someone contacts them on social media claiming to represent IRCC and asks for personal information.

Scammers may impersonate Canadian immigration officials or use fake profiles to obtain sensitive information from visa applicants.

Applicants should verify the identity of anyone claiming to represent the Canadian government before sharing personal documents or details.

2. An agent demands cash and promises a guaranteed visa

Another major warning sign is someone demanding cash-only payment without providing a receipt while promising that a visa is guaranteed.

No legitimate immigration representative can guarantee that an applicant will receive a Canadian visa or permanent residence.

Applicants should be particularly cautious of anyone who claims to have special connections with Canadian immigration authorities and can secure approval in exchange for money.

3. Visa fees are requested through email, phone calls or bank transfers

IRCC also warned against visa fee requests made through email, telephone or bank transfer.

Applicants should be wary of anyone who contacts them unexpectedly and asks them to send immigration fees through unofficial payment channels.

A request to pay money outside the established Canadian government payment process can be a major indication of fraud.

4. Recruiters provide work documents containing numerous errors

People applying for Canadian work permits should also examine documents provided by recruiters.

IRCC warned that work recruiters who provide visa or employment documents containing numerous errors or mistakes may be attempting to deceive applicants.

Job seekers should verify the authenticity of employment offers and immigration documents before making payments or submitting applications.

IRCC urged applicants to remain vigilant and protect themselves from fraud while pursuing Canadian immigration opportunities.

Anyone considering a Canadian visa should rely on official government information and be cautious about unsolicited messages, unrealistic promises and requests for money or personal information.
