governance.

Pate made this known at the 18th Wole Soyinka Centre media lecture series themed, ‘Beyond the Ballot: Measuring Democracy Through Security, Welfare, Accountability and Public Trust’; and public presentation of the 2025 Journalism and Civic Space Status Report to celebrate Nobel Laureate, Prof Wole Soyinka at 92, in Lagos on Monday.

In his keynote, he argued that while democracy is universally defined by constitutional order, elections and political parties, its true value lies in addressing the everyday concerns of citizens.

He stressed that although Nigerians overwhelmingly support democracy, public satisfaction with how it functions remains low because governments have struggled to meet citizens’ expectations in critical areas such as security, economic development and infrastructure.

According to him, democracy can be viewed from two perspectives: procedural democracy, which focuses on elections, constitutionalism and separation of powers, and substantive democracy, which concerns the delivery of human security, economic welfare, social justice, accountability and public trust.

“Democracy remains a concept if substantive matters are not addressed. It only becomes meaningful when it improves the lives of citizens,” he stated.

The don recalled a nationwide survey conducted ahead of the 2015 general election, saying that he was part of a research team commissioned by then vice-president-elect, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, to identify Nigerians’ expectations of the incoming administration.

He said the survey identified security as the country’s foremost concern, followed by the economy, corruption, infrastructure and education.

Pate who is also a Professor of Communication at Bayero University, Kano, noted that while successive administrations have made efforts in these areas, Nigerians continue to assess democracy largely by improvements in their daily lives.

He cited findings from the Afrobarometer survey across 39 African countries, which showed that while about two-thirds of Africans prefer democracy to other forms of government, only about 37 per cent were satisfied with how democracy worked in their respective countries.

According to him, “This reflects a gap between citizens’ commitment to democratic ideals and the actual outcomes of democratic governance.”

The communication scholar also referenced findings from the 2024 African Young People Survey, which revealed that many young Africans are considering emigrating due to corruption and limited opportunities, warning that such sentiments pose serious questions about the future of democracy on the continent.

Pate identified historical grievances, identity politics, social and economic exclusion, youth unemployment, weak institutions and governance deficits as major factors undermining democratic consolidation in Nigeria.

He argued that: “Identity politics has continued to shape political participation, often placing greater emphasis on ethnicity, religion and place of origin than on competence and shared national values.”

He also expressed concern over the collapse of local government institutions in many parts of the country, saying that grassroots governance had previously played a significant role in resolving community disputes, providing basic services and creating economic opportunities.

The professor warned that: “Misinformation, hate speech and divisive narratives amplified through digital platforms are worsening existing social tensions. Nigeria’s challenge is no longer the absence of information but the abundance of false information and the scarcity of public attention.”

He further linked insecurity to rising poverty, hunger, unemployment, environmental challenges and weak governance, arguing that conflicts discourage investment, reduce agricultural productivity and deepen economic hardship.

Maintaining that security remains Nigerians’ greatest expectation of government, Pate noted that the country continues to grapple with insurgency, banditry, kidnapping, communal conflicts, separatist agitations and urban crime.

He called for stronger institutions, inclusive governance and policies that address the root causes of insecurity and inequality, insisting that democracy would only endure if it delivers peace, opportunity and improved living conditions for all Nigerians.

In his remarks, the Consul General of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Lagos, Michael Deleen, expressed concern over the rising level of poverty in Nigeria, attributing it largely to challenges in the country’s education system and democratic governance.

He said education remains critical to empowering citizens, adding that informed and educated people are better equipped to make decisions based on knowledge rather than circumstance.

He therefore urged the government to prioritise addressing the nation’s education and governance challenges, noting that doing so would help reduce poverty and promote sustainable development.

The event featured a review and unveiling of the 2025 civic space status report and panel discussions examining how sophisticated surveillance technologies, institutionalised harassment and shrinking press freedoms are threatening journalists’ safety and the public’s right to information.

The sessions also explored democracy beyond periodic elections, emphasising the need to assess it through good governance, accountability, responsiveness and public trust in institutions.

","wole-soyinka-92-varsity-don-calls-for-democracy-that-delivers-security-economic-prosperity
[1726,1727,1728,1729,66,1268,1730,1731,1732,1733],"wole","soyinka","varsity","don","delivers","security","economic","prosperity","https://global.ariseplay.com/amg/www.thisdaylive.com/uploads/1000993148.jpg
"676b27a5-8a43-458d-91ba-45c07367106b","2026-03-26T09:35:16.600Z","2026-04-20T09:31:29.000Z","This Day","https://api.oneclickafrica.com/media/feed/9fa91fe1-7788-42ef-8d40-5d5ef6e5261e.png","this-day","https://www.thisdaylive.com/2026/07/14/wole-soyinka-92-varsity-don-calls-for-democracy-that-delivers-security-economic-prosperity/
"cf6af9f3-9396-4c5d-ae36-89cc7c69877d","2026-07-13T17:16:00.867Z","2026-07-15T17:15:46.000Z","Nigeria’s democracy needs a new professional ethic for reporting religion – Dapo","Dapo Olorunyomi, a media chief executive has says that Nigeria’s democracy needs a new professional ethic for reporting religion, refering
read more Nigeria’s democracy needs a new professional ethic for reporting religion – Dapo","<img src="https://cdn.businessday.ng/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/Untitled-design-35-large.png" alt="Nigeria’s democracy needs a new professional ethic for reporting religion – governance.

In a statement signed by its President, Prof. Elochukwu Amucheazi, and Secretary, Prof. Jerry Chukwuokolo, the group cautioned that actions perceived as limiting opposition activities could undermine the credibility of the 2027 elections and the country’s democratic process.

The group referenced recent concerns raised by the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Mr. Peter Obi, regarding his security and business interests, as well as court rulings affecting some opposition parties.

ILT also referred to previous remarks attributed to Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo concerning Peter Obi’s security during a visit to the state, and alleged that gunshots were fired during one of Obi’s political engagements in Edo earlier this year.

According to the group, weakening opposition parties could have adverse consequences for Nigeria’s democratic development and political stability.

“The democracy Nigerians enjoy today is the product of years of struggle against military rule,” the statement said, adding that the country requires a strong opposition to deepen democratic governance.

The group also expressed concern over what it described as the use of state institutions, including the judiciary, security agencies and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), in ways that could hinder opposition parties from effectively participating in the electoral process.

It warned against a situation where Nigeria could drift towards a de facto one-party state, arguing that democracy thrives on political pluralism, competition and the protection of dissenting voices.

Citing historical examples, ILT recalled the political crises of the First and Second Republics, as well as the violence that followed the 2011 presidential election, urging political leaders to learn from history and avoid actions capable of triggering instability.

The group also criticised recent judicial decisions affecting opposition parties, particularly a Federal High Court judgment in Lokoja involving the NDC, arguing that the judiciary should uphold constitutional principles and strengthen democratic institutions.

ILT welcomed the NDC’s Okoli

The Igbo Leaders of Thought (ILT), an elite assembly of Southeastern Nigerian intellectuals, traditional rulers and stakeholders, has condemned what it calls the systematic suppression of the opposition parties ahead of the 2027 general elections, warning that no democracy develops without a vibrant opposition.

ILT cautioned that if the clampdown on the opposition is not urgently checked, it could seriously diminish the integrity of the 2027 general elections.

The group’s position came amid the recent alarm raised by the presidential candidate of Nigeria Democratic Congress, NDC, Mr. Peter Obi, over his safety and systematic frustration of his businesses, as well as the several judicial pronouncements against the key opposition parties aimed at destabilizing their preparations for the 2027 polls.

ILT also recalled that Governor Monday Okpebholo of Edo State, had in the past warned Mr. Peter Obi, threatening that his security was not guaranteed in his state, and noted that actually when he visited Edo State early this year for political activities, gunshots were fired at him and others in his entourage.

According to the group, the emasculation of the opposition could wreck Nigeria’s hard fought democracy and cause serious political instability in the country.

ILT, in a statement signed by Prof. Elochukwu Amucheazi, the President and Prof. Jerry Chukwuokolo, the Secretary, also frowned at the use of state institutions, including the judiciary, security agencies and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), to incapacitate the opposition parties, to make them unable to compete with the ruling party for the 2027 general elections.

“The democracy we are enjoying in Nigeria did not come on a platter. It is a product of a long-drawn political struggle against military rule. Ironically, those in power in Nigeria today, who do not want the opposition to breathe, pride themselves as key players in the struggle for the restoration of democracy in Nigeria. The same people who claim to be champions of democracy are emasculating the opposition”, the group noted.

“The Igbo Leaders of Thought strongly condemns the ongoing suppression of opposition in Nigeria. If not curbed, it could derail plans for the 2027 general election, cause serious political instability, and derail our hard won democracy. Nigeria cannot afford another major political crisis arising from election. The country suffered dearly because of the mistakes of past elections.

“Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat the mistakes” ILT warned, and remained Nigerians of the violent political protest (Operation Wetie) that took place in 1962 in Western Nigeria which triggered a chain of events, including bloodletting and burning of properties, which eventually led to the first military coup in Nigeria on January 15, 1966.

“In the Second Republic, a disputed governorship election triggered a devastating political upheaval in Ondo State, resulting in widespread burning of properties and loss of severally lives, ultimately paving the way for another military intervention in 1983.

“If we cannot remember what happened in the First and Second Republics, we should be able to remember the political violence that trailed the 2011 presidential election, which according to Human Rights Watch, claimed over 800 lives in Northern Nigeria, including innocent youth corps members. We are not in any way trying to engage in scare mongering, but just appealing to those in authority in Nigeria to do what is right.”

The post Igbo leaders warns against suppression of opposition, says it destroys democracy appeared first on Vanguard News.

","igbo-leaders-warns-against-suppression-of-opposition-says-it-destroys-democracy
[1772,1773,1800,1801,1777,1802,1803,1268],"warns","suppression","says","destroys
9,"https://www.vanguardngr.com/2026/07/igbo-leaders-warns-against-suppression-of-opposition-says-it-destroys-democracy/
[1810,1814,1828,1847
[1587,1588,1589,1590,1591,1592,1593,1594,1595
"78129157-2138-446c-890c-c9b0a5c7f5ab","2026-07-16T08:29:00.467Z","2026-07-16T15:15:25.000Z","VIDEO: Akpabio threatens to sue contractor over faulty N’Assembly microphones","Senate President Godswill Akpabio threatens legal action against the contractor responsible for faulty microphones in the National Assembly complex. 2026.

Moving the motion, Senate Leader, Senator Opeyemi Bamidele, said the chamber had discovered fundamental concerns that required further legislative scrutiny and refinement to ensure the bill achieved its intended objectives.

He noted that leaving the identified issues unresolved could undermine the effective implementation of the proposed law and create unintended legal and operational consequences.

According to him, it was in the overriding public interest for the Senate to revisit the bill to ensure that it conforms with international best practices on asset recovery, proceeds of crime management, and Nigeria’s constitutional and legal framework.

Relying on Orders 1(b) and 52(6) of the Senate Standing Orders (2023–2027), Bamidele urged the Senate to rescind its earlier decision to allow for comprehensive review of the contentious provisions.

The motion sparked a brief procedural clarification after former Senate Leader, Senator Yahaya Abdullahi, raised concerns over whether the motion had been properly listed on the supplementary Order Paper.

Presiding Senate President Godswill Akpabio clarified that the motion was validly brought under Order 1(b), while Bamidele explained that Abdullahi’s intervention was purely procedural and not an objection to the substance of the motion.

Abdullahi subsequently seconded the motion, describing the reasons advanced by the Senate Leader as being in the national interest.

He said the identified issues justified reopening the bill to ensure that the final legislation aligns with international standards and Nigeria’s legal framework.

The former Senate Leader, however, sought clarification on the next legislative step, asking whether the bill would be returned to the relevant Senate committee or referred to the National Assembly’s legal department for the required amendments and further scrutiny.

Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin commended the Senate Leader for promptly bringing the matter before the chamber after the deficiencies were discovered.

He noted that errors could occur during the legislative process and stressed that correcting them before a bill becomes law demonstrated legislative responsibility rather than weakness.

Jibrin urged senators to approve the rescission without delay so that the identified deficiencies could be corrected expeditiously.

Also contributing, Senator Abdul Ningi said the development was not unusual in parliamentary practice, advising that the sponsor of the bill should be fully involved in harmonising the revised provisions to ensure broad ownership of the final legislation.

A few senators observed that if the proposed amendments were substantial, the bill might require another public hearing.

However, the Senate President ruled the observation out of order, explaining that the chamber was only considering the motion to rescind the earlier passage of the bill and not debating its substantive provisions.

Akpabio clarified that the legislation, which was a private member’s bill rather than an executive bill, would be reconsidered after the identified inconsistencies with international best practices had been addressed.

Following a voice vote, the Senate unanimously adopted the motion, thereby rescinding its July 9 decision approving the Proceeds of Crime Act (Amendment) Bill, 2026.

Akpabio thereafter directed that the bill should not be transmitted to the House of Representatives pending its review.

Shortly after the decision, Bamidele moved a motion for the Senate to proceed into a closed-door session to consider matters he described as urgent and of national importance.

Before the motion was taken, Deputy Senate President Jibrin cited Section 62 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended) to remind senators that while committees are empowered to make recommendations, the constitution does not compel either chamber of the National Assembly to adopt such recommendations.

He stressed that legislative committees serve only advisory functions and that the Senate retains the constitutional authority to accept, modify or reject any recommendation placed before it.

The Senate President sustained the constitutional point of order.

The motion for a closed session, seconded by Minority Leader, Senator Abba Moro, was subsequently adopted by voice vote, after which the Senate proceeded worry over the use of the photograph of the Chief Judge of Kogi State, Justice Josiah Joe Majebi, alongside that of former Governor Yahaya Bello in the viral post, saying it appeared to be a deliberate attempt to create the false impression that the alleged decision came from the state’s judiciary.

The Court added that although it would not normally respond to nullified the guidelines and barred their implementation.

In the lead judgment prepared by Justice Adebukola Banjoko but read by Justice Okon Abang, the Court of Appeal held that the Youth Party (YP), which instituted the case against INEC, lacked legal power (locus standi) to do what it did.

Justice Banjoko said that the party did not explain how the guidelines affected it and its members in the conduct of its primary elections for the nomination of candidates for the 2027 polls.

The court also held that the YP failed to establish how the guidelines affected the submission of its nominated candidates to INEC.

The three justices unanimously agreed that Justice Mohammed Umar of the Federal High Court, Abuja, who on May 20 nullified the guidelines on the ground that it violated some provisions of the Electoral Act, did so in gross errors and led to a miscarriage of justice.

INEC, which filed an appeal against the high court’s decision, had argued that the lower court erred in law when it failed to pronounce on the jurisdictional issue of the suit being hypothetical and academic, and a denial of fair hearing to the appellant.

INEC, through its lead counsel, Dr Alex Izinyon, had asked the Court of Appeal to set aside the judgment of the Federal High Court which nullified part of the election guidelines put in place by the agency for the conduct of the 2027 general election.

The Federal High Court in Abuja had invalidated the timeline issued by INEC for the conduct of primaries and the nomination of candidates, ahead of the 2027 general election.

In a judgment delivered by Justice Mohammed Umar, it also set aside INEC’s May 10 deadline requiring political parties to submit a register and database of all their members as a condition for qualifying to participate in the general elections.

The court held that the time frame the electoral umpire announced for political parties to conduct their primaries and to submit, withdraw, or replace the names and particulars of their candidates for the general elections “is inconsistent with the provisions of the Electoral Act, 2026.”

But in the appeal dated May 25, 2026, filed by INEC, through its counsel, Izinyon (SAN), the electoral body prayed the court to set aside the judgment.

The senior advocate, in the appeal, also asked the court to stay the execution of the judgment.

In the appeal, the electoral umpire raised nine grounds of appeal and prayed the court to set aside the
