Cleric critises appointing clinicians as administrators in health institutions

BENIN CITY – A cleric, Engineer Osaze Egbenusi has criticized the increasing appointment of clinicians to head hospitals across Nigeria while professional health administrators exist.

Speaking at a public lecture organised by the Institute of Health Service Administrators of Nigeria (IHSAN), University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH) Chapter, with the title “Still Diligent: The mindset of the public servant in a healthcare system in flux” Egbenusi also criticised the government for inadequate funding for government health institutions which he said is responsible Nigerian political leaders to always run abroad for every slight health challenge that they have.

In his lecture, Eng. Egbenusi spelt out the roles of Administrators which has been shifted to Clinicians.

He maintained that “Clinicians are not administrators and cannot be” lamenting that administrators in health facilities are largely relegated to file recorders to even the cleaners yet “there can be no smooth clinical activities in their absence”.

He said that if this misappropriation of duties continues, it would lead to dearth of resources and advised that doctors should be made to face their primary assignments because they presently are in short supply in the country.

The speaker who is also a lawyer defined the distinct line between working by motivation and working by diligence and postulated that understanding these conditions is key to advancing the health sector in Nigeria.

He therefore encouraged administrators to have a mindset of resilience without bitterness and do their works with dedication despite the lacuna in the system.

He appealed to the Federal government to properly fund the health sector to build trust in the country’s services and bid farewell to the constant “health pilgrimage.”

Earlier in his remarks, Chairman of the IHSAN UBTH, Joshua Uwaila Esq, said the lecture was the first organised by the association.

“It is the visionary prospect of the union that has ensured the inclusion of various unions and public servants in today’s public lecture to educate all on responsive roles and commitments towards the smooth running of health institutions on particular” he said.
