Court adjourns Shinkafi’s suit against INEC, APC, Senator Kaura to June 25

By Idris Salisu, Gusau

GUSAU — A Federal High Court sitting in Gusau, Zamfara State, has adjourned a suit filed by APC Zamfara North senatorial aspirant, Sani Abdullahi Shinkafi, against the Independent National Electoral Commission, the All Progressives Congress and Senator Sahabi Ya’u Kaura to June 25, 2026.

Shinkafi is challenging the alleged non-conduct of senatorial primary elections in Zamfara North, which he said contravened the provisions of the APC constitution.

Presiding over the matter, Justice Hassan Dikko noted the absence of two of the three defendants — INEC and the APC — and subsequently adjourned the case until June 25, 2026, for further mention.

The court directed that the defendants be properly served with court processes and given the opportunity to file their responses before the next hearing date.

Speaking with journalists after the proceedings, counsel to the third defendant, Barrister J.C. Shaka, said he had appeared before the court and filed processes seeking the dismissal of the suit.

He argued that there was no valid basis for the plaintiff’s claim regarding the conduct of a senatorial primary election that produced Senator Kaura as the party’s candidate.

Also speaking, counsel to the plaintiff, Barrister Bello Galadi, said the matter came up for mention and that the court adjourned the case to allow the remaining defendants to appear and state their positions on the claims before the court.

“We still repeat our demand for justice before the court over the purported senatorial primary election which produced the third defendant as the winner. The exercise was marred by irregularities following the failure to comply with provisions guiding the conduct of the election,” Galadi said.

The matter is expected to resume on June 25, when the court will hear from all parties after the completion of service and filing of responses.
