The main opposition United Democratic Party (UDP) leader Ousainu Darboe has urged Gambian women to use the December 5 election to demand better opportunities and end their “neglect”.
Darboe made the remarks during a UDP meeting at Serekunda Market, which drew a large crowd, particularly women traders.
He told supporters that his decision to contest the election was not driven by a desire for power or a government position.
“If I wanted a position today, I will be in government. If I was power hungry, I would tell you guys to vote for me two terms. That is why I just want five years to build the foundation of this country,” he said.
Darboe said the election should not be viewed as a contest to secure political positions for himself or other party members but to build a good foundation for the country.
He said the election should instead focus on young Gambians who he described as hopeless due to limited opportunities.
“This election is for the hopeless youths. The opportunities should be given to you on the 5th December when you cast your votes and give it to UDP,” he said.
Turning to women traders, Darboe praised their contribution to the country’s economy while accusing the government of neglecting them.
“You Gambian women, your work in these markets is what drives the country. Your taxes is what drives the country, but you people are neglected,” he said.
He urged women to see the election as an opportunity to improve their living conditions.
“This election is the chance for you people to uplift the suffering on yourselves,” Darboe said.
He also described women as “king makers” and called on them to vote wisely in this coming presidential election.
