Governor of Niger State, Umaru Bago, has said that the deaths of 37 artisanal miners while in the custody of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) were unfortunate, noting that the incident had attracted significant local and international attention.
Bago revealed the development when he received a delegation of traditional rulers, led by the Chairman of the Niger State Council of Traditional Rulers and Etsu Nupe, Alhaji Yahaya Abubakar, who paid him a condolence visit at the Government House in Minna on Tuesday.
He commended traditional rulers across the state for their active roles in maintaining peace and harmony in their respective domains.
Governor Bago thanked the traditional rulers for their visit and expression of sympathy, describing their gesture as a demonstration of leadership and solidarity with the government and people of the state.
He particularly commended the traditional institutions for their support and cooperation with his administration, especially in maintaining law and order through ward and village heads across the state.
Governor Bago also appreciated the Emirs, particularly the Emir of Minna, Umar Faruk Bahago, for their efforts in ensuring that their communities remained calm following the incident.
He acknowledged that Niger State is confronted with several challenges, including insecurity, but said his administration was working closely with the Federal Government to address the challenges and ensure peace and stability across the state.
Earlier, the Etsu Nupe and Chairman of the Niger State Council of Traditional Rulers, Alhaji Yahaya Abubakar, described the deaths of the 37 artisanal miners as tragic and prayed to Allah to forgive their souls.
He urged Governor Bago to remain steadfast and prayed for Allah’s continued guidance, wisdom and strength for the governor to lead the state to greater heights.
The traditional ruler commended the governor’s efforts towards promoting peace and development in Niger State.
Alhaji Yahaya also called on all stakeholders to abide by the rules and regulations governing their activities, stressing that compliance with the law is essential for peace and harmonious coexistence in the state.
