Governor Umar Namadi of Jigawa State has called on Nigerians to actively participate in the democratic process and embrace values that promote national unity, tolerance and development.
The governor made the call in a Democracy Day message issued on Thursday by his Chief Press Secretary, Hamisu Muhammad, to commemorate the June 12 celebration.
The governor described the occasion as an opportunity to reflect on Nigeria’s democratic journey and the responsibilities of both leaders and citizens in sustaining democratic governance.
Namadi said democracy can only flourish when citizens remain engaged, informed and committed to the common good, stressing that nation-building is a collective responsibility that extends beyond government.
“Democracy thrives when citizens remain engaged, informed and committed to the common good. Nation-building is not the responsibility of government alone.
“It requires the contributions of every citizen through lawful conduct, hard work, patriotism and respect for our shared values,” he said.
The governor urged Nigerians to continue embracing tolerance, civic responsibility and respect for differing opinions, noting that these values are essential for strengthening democratic institutions and fostering peaceful coexistence.
He described June 12 as a significant date in Nigeria’s history, saying it symbolises the courage and sacrifices of individuals who fought for justice, freedom and the right of citizens to choose their leaders.
According to him, democracy goes beyond the conduct of elections and encompasses the strengthening of institutions, adherence to the rule of law, protection of citizens’ rights and accountability in governance.
While acknowledging the challenges encountered in Nigeria’s democratic journey, Namadi expressed optimism about the country’s future, attributing its strength to the resilience, diversity and determination of its people.
The governor also commended traditional rulers, religious leaders, community groups and security agencies for their contributions to maintaining peace and social harmony in Jigawa State.
Namadi reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to people-centred governance and urged citizens to continue supporting efforts aimed at promoting development, unity and democratic growth.
He also expressed support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, emphasising the need for collaboration among all levels of government to address national challenges and improve the welfare of citizens.
The governor prayed for continued peace, unity and prosperity in Jigawa State and Nigeria, urging citizens to remain steadfast in their commitment to democratic ideals and national progress.
