The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, has reaffirmed the Nigeria Police Force’s commitment to strengthening counterterrorism efforts, protecting civilians, upholding human rights and ensuring adherence to the rule of law.
Disu made this known on Wednesday, August 12, 2026, in Washington, D.C., where he represented the Nigeria Police Force at the second United States-Nigeria Country of Particular Concern (CPC) Joint Working Group meeting.
The meeting reviewed progress made under the CPC Joint Working Group Roadmap during the April-June 2026 reporting period and examined opportunities for deeper cooperation between Nigeria and the United States in addressing security and law-enforcement challenges.
The IGP was part of a high-level Nigerian delegation led by the National Security Adviser and comprising the Ministers of Foreign Affairs, Interior and Defence, Service Chiefs and heads of other security and law-enforcement agencies.
Presenting the contributions of the Nigeria Police Force to the implementation of the roadmap, Disu highlighted ongoing counter-kidnapping and anti-banditry operations, increased police presence in vulnerable communities and the deployment of early-warning mechanisms.
He also cited measures aimed at protecting internally displaced persons and facilitating their safe return to their communities.
According to him, specialised police formations were deployed to vulnerable local government areas during the reporting period to strengthen public safety and deter violent extremist and criminal groups.
Disu also disclosed that preparations for the recruitment of 50,000 police constables had reached the final pre-training stage.
He said comprehensive training programmes were being developed based on an improved curriculum and international best practices to enhance the capacity and professionalism of new recruits.
The IGP stressed the importance of community engagement in addressing security challenges, saying the police had continued to strengthen collaboration with traditional rulers, religious leaders and other critical stakeholders.
He noted that public trust, religious tolerance and peaceful coexistence remained essential to achieving sustainable security across the country.
Disu further reaffirmed the commitment of the Nigeria Police Force to conducting lawful and professional investigations, protecting civilians, respecting human rights and adhering to due process.
He said the principles remained central to the police contribution to Nigeria’s broader counterterrorism and criminal justice framework.
The IGP assured members of the Joint Working Group that the NPF would continue to implement the roadmap through professional policing, enhanced community protection, stronger investigative capacity and sustained support for Nigeria’s security and rule-of-law objectives.
The meeting also underscored the importance of sustained Nigeria-US cooperation in strengthening institutional capacity and addressing emerging security challenges.
