Road Safety

How good is your eyesight? How good do you see when you drive? And how healthy are you? Are you within my age bracket and therefore require a recommended eye glass to aid your driving or are you one of those with bad eyesight, yet pretend you can cope with the rigor of driving without an aid from a doctor?

Well, I will allow you to be the judge of the risky driving habits you indulge in daily. For me, I would rather take the right decision and stay alive, rather than playing naïve at my own risk. For starters, let me share my experience with a couple of drivers whose driving experiences varies from two years to twenty-five years.

I was privileged to be part of the screening team as well as the resource persons conscripted to coach as well as mold them to become safety conscious drivers. Our interaction included coordinating their medicals as well as acuity test to confirm their mental status. I hear they all made good results although my daily interaction shows that some despite their younger ages might need some aid to smoothen their driving.

While I leave that decision for their employer to act upon, permit me to remind you that road safety remains one of the most pressing public health challenges globally.  The World Health Organization, put the annual global death figure at approximately 1.6 million deaths on the world’s roads, with millions more sustaining severe injuries.

I know that vehicle technology, road infrastructure, and traffic regulations play significant roles in road traffic crashes prevention, however, one variable that stands above all others is driver acuity. Driver acuity is the state of mental, visual, and physical sharpness required to operate a vehicle safely which is the cornerstone of effective road safety. This critical relationship between driver acuity and road safety outcomes demands comprehensive understanding, systematic assessment, and deliberate skill development in professional driver training programmes.

Driver acuity is more than being a licensed driver or having technical vehicle control skills. It encompasses the capacity to perceive hazards accurately, process complex information rapidly, anticipate dangerous scenarios, and execute appropriate responses under varying conditions. A driver with high acuity maintains heightened awareness of the dynamic traffic environment, recognises subtle warning signs before they become emergencies, and possesses the cognitive and physical reserves to respond effectively when unexpected situations arise.

Driver acuity rests on three interdependent dimensions stating with visual acuity. It involves not only clarity of central vision but also the breadth of peripheral awareness, the ability to adapt to changing light conditions, and accurate depth perception. A driver must detect hazards approaching from multiple directions simultaneously while maintaining focus on the road ahead.

Mental acuity encompasses concentration, situational awareness, decision-making speed, and emotional regulation. A mentally sharp driver anticipates scenarios two to three vehicle lengths ahead, recognizes patterns in traffic behaviour, and maintains composure under pressure. Physical acuity also involves reaction time, coordination, muscle control, and endurance. These physical capacities translate perception and decision into corrective action steering adjustments, braking pressure, or acceleration changes executed with precision.

What then is the road safety imperative? The link between driver acuity and road safety is direct and measurable. Studies consistently demonstrates that lapses in driver acuity correlate with specific road traffic crashes categories. For instance, rear-end collisions frequently stem from reduced alertness or delayed hazard perception while lane-change incidents often result from poor peripheral vision or momentary inattention. On the other hand,loss-of-control crashes are often linked to degraded mental acuity leading to overcorrection or panic responses. Intersection collisions which is frequent in cities such as Abuja and Lagos, often involve drivers who failed to anticipate the actions of other road users; a failure rooted in insufficient situational awareness.

Conversely, drivers who demonstrate high acuity, often avoid crashes that other drivers encounter. Studies of professional drivers with intensive training in hazard recognition and vehicle dynamics show lower crash   than untrained drivers in comparable driving conditions. This differential is not attributable to superior vehicles or roads; it reflects the protective power of maintained driver acuity. When drivers remain mentally engaged, visually attentive, and physically prepared, crashes that seem inevitable to fatigue or distracted drivers become entirely preventable.

What are the threats to driver acuity? Plenty. Today’s driving environments present unprecedented challenges to driver acuity starting from fatigue. Fatigue presents the most threat as long hours of continuous driving, particularly during late night, early afternoon, degrade all three dimensions of acuity simultaneously. Mental fatigue narrows attention focus; while visual fatigue reduces scanning efficiency. Physical fatigue on the other hand, slows reaction time. The real danger lies in the driver’s often-inaccurate self-assessment as many drivers continue driving despite significant fatigue, unaware of their compromised state until a critical moment arrives.

Besides fatigue, distraction is another. Distraction is a modern plague. Mobile phones, in-vehicle entertainment systems, and competing attentional demands, fragment the focus necessary for high acuity. Research shows that texting while driving reduces reaction time equivalent to the impairment of a 0.08% blood alcohol level which is the legal drunk-driving threshold in many jurisdictions. Yet texting represents just one distraction among dozens vying for the driver’s attention in contemporary driving environments.

Substance use is another. They include alcohol, illicit drugs, or certain medications which directly compromises driver acuity across all dimensions. Alcohol impairs judgment and coordination while stimulants create overconfidence masking degraded actual performance. Also, sedating medications reduce alertness. Meanwhile, seemingly minor substances can accumulate effects over time, creating dangerous cumulative impairment.

Health conditions play a significant role. They range from undiagnosed sleep apnea to untreated hypertension to deteriorating vision which silently undermine driver acuity. The irony is that while older drivers may not recognize that their reaction times have lengthened or their night vision has degraded, younger drivers may overestimate their capacity to manage complex driving situations.

Emotional and psychological states influence acuity. For example, anger narrows attention and promotes aggressive responses while anxiety creates tunnel vision and reactive panic. Depression on its own, reduces motivation for safety compliance while grief or personal crisis diverts mental resources from driving demands. In professional driving contexts, where drivers operate in high-stress environments or manage confidential information, psychological readiness becomes a critical safety factor.

To build and maintain acuity, road safety strategies must prioritize the systematic development and maintenance of driver acuity. This begins with baseline assessment identifying a driver’s initial levels of visual clarity, reaction time, hazard perception capability, and stress management capacity. Baseline assessments provide benchmarks against which progress can be measured and warning signs detected. Structured training programmes should address each acuity dimension systematically. Visual training includes hazard perception exercises, where drivers practice identifying emerging threats in photographic or video scenarios. Mental training encompasses decision-making under time pressure, scenario-based response planning, and stress inoculation through graduated exposure to challenging situations. Physical training develops smooth coordination, emergency vehicle control skills, and endurance for extended driving periods. Defensive driving courses that integrate all three dimensions have demonstrated significant crash reduction across trained driver populations.

Personal health and wellness directly support driver acuity maintenance. Drivers who prioritize sleep quality, maintain physical fitness, manage stress through appropriate outlets, and address medical concerns proactively preserve their driving safety. Organizations can support these factors through wellness programs, fatigue management policies, and access to mental health resources. Professional drivers operating vehicles for institutional purposes should be subject to regular medical screening and acuity reassessment to ensure continued safety fitness.

Technology can serve as both a challenge and solution. While in-vehicle distractions threaten acuity, vehicle safety systems can partially compensate for acuity lapses through collision avoidance features, lane-keeping assistance, and automated braking. However, technology is not a substitute for high acuity; rather, it serves as a safety net for the inevitable moments when driver acuity fails.

Corporate organizations must support driver acuity through establishing realistic drive-time limits to prevent fatigue accumulation, mandating regular vehicle maintenance to ensure reliable braking and visibility systems, and creating accountability structures that reward safe driving practices. Data from vehicle telematics information on braking patterns, acceleration smoothness, and cornering behavior can provide feedback to drivers about their actual performance relative to their self-perception.

Let me draw the curtain by stating that regulatory frameworks, vehicle design, and infrastructure improvements are vital for crash prevention. None, however, tackles the human element: the driver’s capacity to perceive, process, decide, and act appropriately within the seconds separating safety from tragedy.
