The Inspector-General of Police, IGP, Olatunji Disu, has cautioned Nigerian youths to ensure that their ambitions are not cut short due to exigency, criminality, or violence.
The IGP issued this warning on Thursday during the Force’s celebration of International Youth Day in Abuja, emphasizing that certain youthful behaviors could truncate their dreams.
“The challenge we face is to ensure that these aspirations are not sacrificed on the altar of youthful exigency, criminality, or violence,” the IGP stated to a gathering of young individuals and students.
He advised the youths to avoid unnecessary risks, recounting instances where many young lives have been lost due to such actions.
“As we approach the 2027 electoral cycle, I urge you to keep in mind a simple yet profound truth: once political contests and campaigns conclude, political figures will shake hands and reconcile.
“However, young Nigerians who fall victim to electoral violence do not return home. We continue to emphasize: Think, and do what is right.
“The force fully acknowledges and respects the constitutional rights of Nigerian youth to engage in political activities, support political parties, express their views, and campaign for their preferred candidates.
“Our duty is to establish a secure environment where these democratic practices can occur freely and safely. We are committed to protecting citizens, facilitating peaceful campaigns, and securing candidates, campaign venues, and public spaces in accordance with the law.
“We will safeguard the electoral environment. However, let me be unequivocal: we will not protect violence. We will not accept the recruitment or mobilization of young Nigerians for hostile agendas. I therefore urge everyone to exercise caution as we approach the 2027 electoral period.
“To all young Nigerians who possess a smartphone, I emphasize that your digital footprint constitutes a fundamental aspect of your rights.
“Therefore, your online presence is exceedingly significant. Prior to forwarding any message, ensure its accuracy. Before making any allegations public, confirm the facts. When engaging in online criticism, bear in mind that there is a real person on the other side of the screen.
“Consider your actions before you click, verify information before sharing, and take a moment to reflect before utilizing it. Your voice holds value in the digital realm,” the IGP added.
