Fulfilling the late Coach Joseph Erico’s prediction
I fulfilled Coach Joseph Erico’s prediction that I would one day be in goal for the national team. My brother was a goalkeeper, and I used to watch him train alongside Alloy Agu because we grew up in the same area. I used to be their ball boy. I grew up under the guidance of Joe Erico, and he prophesied that I would one day play for Nigeria. The first time I stood in goal for the Super Eagles, I remembered his prediction. The rest is history.
2) Defying the odds to play in Italy
During that era, most of my contemporaries chose to play in Belgium, which was then the Mecca for Nigerian footballers. However, I elected to ply my trade in the Italian Serie A—a league not only famous for its defensive tactics but also one that boasted great goalkeepers. Despite the competition, I was able to command a regular starting shirt with my club, Reggiana.
3) The golden moment in Atlanta
I will never forget the 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games. Winning the gold medal in the football event was the golden moment of Nigerian sports. While Nigeria boasted a lot of talented players during the 1994 World Cup, I do not really see what that team achieved. Our feat in Atlanta was the best achievement ever by any of our national teams. The Olympics is second only to the World Cup on FIFA’s calendar, and Nigeria was the first African country to win it. That is no small achievement by any standard.
4) The tragic car accident that cut short my career
Shortly after our Olympic victory, I was involved in a horrific automobile accident on Ikorodu Road in Lagos. It was an unfortunate tragedy that prematurely ended my football career.
5) Marrying a supportive wife
Marrying a very supportive wife remains the most memorable event of my life. Were it not for her, I might never have walked again; she is everything to me. After the accident, people said all sorts of things: ‘He can’t walk again,’ ‘He is finished,’ and ‘He will be in a wheelchair for life.’ A different woman might have packed her bags and left me to my fate, which would have completely demoralised me and perhaps stopped my recovery. Instead, she stood by me throughout my predicament and rehabilitation. She was right there with me in the hospital when my surgery was performed in Tallahassee. She even slept on the floor just to give me comfort. I urged her to sleep in a hotel and visit every morning, but she refused, saying she preferred to stay by my side rather than waste money.
6) The unforgettable victory over Argentina
I will always look back on our victory over Argentina with intense nostalgia. I felt incredibly proud to be an African. We felt like we could reign as champions forever. When we arrived back in Nigeria, the atmosphere was unforgettable. Thousands of people lined the streets to welcome us at the airport. It felt as though that moment should last forever, but all celebrations must eventually come to an end.
7) Helping Julius Berger win the FA Cup
The FA Cup was a massive competition in our playing days, and the winners were highly respected. I helped Julius Berger win the Nigerian FA Cup in 1996 by keeping a clean sheet in the final against Katsina United.

I was the only home-based player included in Nigeria’s 1996 Olympic squad. Despite being the least experienced of the three goalkeepers, I ended up as the team’s first choice, which was highly unusual. Ahead of our first game against Hungary, I still did not believe I would start. Coach Jo Bonfrère announced the names of the ten outfield players but omitted the goalkeeper. Later, he simply said, ‘Dosu Joseph in goal.’ I did not expect it, and football fans back home did not expect it either.
9) Establishing the Westerlo Football Academy
Steering the Westerlo Football Academy into becoming one of Nigeria’s top clubs for producing elite stars is an enduring milestone in my life. We formed the academy in 2002, and we give glory to God for our growth. Today, we are exactly where we want to be: consistently producing players for the local league, the national teams, and European clubs.
