Ebola: Adamawa activates emergency response system

Daily Post 11 minutes 3 mins read

The Adamawa State Government has intensified preparedness and activated its emergency response machinery in case the state experiences an outbreak of Ebola virus disease.

The state Ministry of Health and Human Development said Thursday that the Ebola preventive and mitigating measures include activation of the state Rapid Response Team and Emergency Operations Centre.

The ministry, in a press statement signed by its Information Officer, Abubakar Mohammed, also said the state has activated its infectious disease centre.

"These proactive measures are aimed at strengthening early detection, prompt reporting, effective coordination, and rapid response to any suspected case," the ministry stated.

It explained that the state's Rapid Response Team and Emergency Operations Centre would coordinate activities, strengthen inter-agency collaboration, and ensure timely, organised response to any suspected Ebola case.

"All disease surveillance officers and notification focal persons across the state's 21 local government areas have been put on high alert, to intensify disease monitoring and immediately report any suspected case," the ministry stated.

It explained further that the activated infectious disease centre of the state would support assessment, isolation and management of suspected cases, as well as handle arrangements for infection prevention and control and patient referral.

According to the ministry, a statewide public sensitisation campaign would begin immediately to educate residents about the Ebola virus: its mode of transmission, symptoms, and importance of prompt reporting and seeking proper care.

The government urged calm among the residents as it strives to get over the Ebola threat, urging them to, on their own, support prevention measures by practising proper hand hygiene, and avoiding contact with blood and other fluids from anyone suspected of having Ebola.

DAILY POST reports that on Tuesday, October 20, health officials confirmed an imported case of the Bundibugyo strain of the Ebola virus into Nigeria; the patient being a woman who travelled from Uganda to Abuja earlier on October 3, 2026, and developed symptoms on October 7, and was diagnosed after she sought care, following which authorities identified and placed dozens of close contacts under medical surveillance.

Earlier in history, Nigeria experienced a major epidemic in 2014, when the West African Ebola outbreak hit Nigeria. On July 23, 2014, the first case was declared in Lagos after an infected traveller arrived from Liberia.

The battle against it was intense, however, and by October 20, 2014, the World Health Organization officially declared the country Ebola-free after it was able to prevent it from reaching beyond Lagos and Rivers State where 20 cases and eight deaths were confirmed.
