Ebola: Infected Patient Develops Multiple Organ Failure

InformationNG about 1 hour 1 mins read

The patient infected with Ebola in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) has developed multiple organ failure, the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) has disclosed

The agency confirmed on Wednesday that the patient contracted the Bundibugyo strain of the virus, following an earlier announcement by Health Minister Muhammad Ali Pate that a female traveller from Uganda had tested positive.

However, Charles Olaro, Uganda’s Director-General of Health Services, later clarified that the patient was Nigerian.

Providing further details, Olajumoke Babatunde, the NCDC’s Director of Public Health Laboratory Services, said laboratory investigations identified the infection as the Bundibugyo strain, first detected in Uganda in 2007.

The strain has also been associated with a major outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Ebola can spread through direct contact with the bodily fluids of an infected person or contaminated materials.

Babatunde further revealed that the diplomat’s condition had deteriorated, resulting in multi-organ failure. She, however, did not disclose the patient’s nationality.

“We did three levels of tests, but all were molecular. The strain was Bundibugyo,” she said.
