The National Orientation Agency, NOA, in Jigawa State has urged residents to remain calm and observe necessary preventive measures following reports of a confirmed Ebola virus case in Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory, FCT.
The state director of the agency, Mallam Ahmed Tijjani Ibrahim, made the call while addressing growing concerns over the reported outbreak and possible spread of the disease.
He advised residents against panic, stressing the importance of relying on accurate information from recognised health authorities.
According to him, public awareness, early reporting of suspected cases and adherence to health guidelines are essential to preventing the spread of the virus.
Ibrahim recalled how Nigeria successfully contained the Ebola outbreak in 2014, expressing confidence in the country's ability to respond effectively to similar public health threats.
He urged residents to maintain proper personal and environmental hygiene and avoid direct contact with the blood or body fluids of persons suspected of being infected.
“People should report possible exposure immediately, even if they feel well. Seek guidance before visiting a hospital if symptoms develop, avoid close contact with others, and call public health authorities for instructions before going to a healthcare facility,” he said.
The director also called on residents to cooperate with health officials involved in contact tracing and other preventive activities.
He warned against spreading rumours and unverified information capable of creating unnecessary fear among members of the public.
Ibrahim further urged residents to avoid discrimination against suspected patients and their families, stressing that affected persons deserve dignity, care and support.
He maintained that collective responsibility, accurate information and cooperation with health authorities would help protect communities against the disease.
