The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has launched a manhunt for a former chairman of the defunct Pension Reform Task Force, Abdulrashid Maina.
This is just as the security agencies in the country, including the Nigerian Immigration Service, were put on high alert, saying Maina should be arrested anywhere he’s seen.
It was learnt that operatives of the commission have also been urged to go after the former government official following his failure to honour a series of invitation letters extended to him.
Dele Oyewale, the spokesman of the anti-graft agency, in a telephone interview with our correspondent, confirmed the development.
“Yes, he has been declared wanted. It is today (Wednesday) we declared him wanted,” Oyewale simply said.
Maina, alongside his son, Faisal, was arraigned on October 25, 2019, on 12-count charges bordering on money laundering and concealment of proceeds of unlawful act.
Justice Okon Abang, who was a Federal High Court judge in Abuja before his promotion to the Court of Appeal, convicted Maina for allegedly stealing N2 billion.
The money, according to findings of the prosecutors and the court, was meant for pensioners.
The former pension reform task team boss was found guilty of concealing his true identity as a signatory to accounts opened in UBA and Fidelity Bank.
Maina was said to have used the identity of his family members without their knowledge.
The accounts had cash deposits of N300 million, N500 million, and N1.5 billion.
The court added that Maina could not prove that the money in the accounts was not stolen.
He was subsequently sentenced to 61 years in prison.
However, in a fresh declaration, the anti-graft agency explained that Maina, an indigene of Biu in Borno State, is wanted for an alleged case of receiving stolen properties.
“The public is hereby notified that Abdulrasheed Abdulllahi Maina, whose photograph appears above, is wanted by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in an alleged case of Receiving Stolen Properties. Maina, 61, is an indigene of Biu in Borno State.
“Anybody with useful information as to his whereabouts should please contact the Commission in its Ibadan, Uyo, Sokoto, Maiduguri, Benin, Makurdi, Kaduna, Ilorin, Enugu, Kano, Lagos, Gombe, Port Harcourt or Abuja offices or through 08093322644; its e-mail address: info@efcc.gov.ng or the nearest Police Station and other security agencies,” the latest public notice by the EFCC read.
