Former Crystal Palace striker, Clinton Morrison has hailed Super Eagles defender, Calvin Bassey for his performance in Fulham’s goal against Manchester United at Craven Cottage on Sunday.
The Nigerian international made a significant contribution to Fulham’s goal before Manchester United equalised 1-1 in the closing stages through a strike from Matheus Cunha.
Bassey demonstrated exceptional defensive awareness by regaining possession from Cunha before advancing forward and striking towards Manchester United goalkeeper, Senne Lammens from beyond the penalty area.
Lammens deflected the attempt, but the ball struck Lisandro Martinez and rebounded into the net.
Speaking on BBC Radio 5 Live, Morrison praised Bassey’s defensive performance and his ability to advance the ball forward.
He said: “That sums Man United up. Brilliant defending from Bassey, Cunha not strong enough, and Bassey drives forward.”
He further criticised the Manchester United players for their involvement in the goal concession.
“It is a straightforward save for Lammens to execute, and he mishandles it, redirecting it towards Martinez. I am uncertain what Martinez is attempting — he extends a foot, and it rolls across the line. Substandard performance overall, inadequate from Cunha, inadequate from Lammens, failing to position his feet correctly,” he continued.
Bassey, who delivered a commendable performance, will regret that Fulham could not maintain their advantage in front of their home crowd.
The centre-back will subsequently concentrate on international competition following his selection for the Super Eagles squad for Nigeria’s AFCON qualifying matches against Mozambique and Guinea-Bissau.
