EPL: Paul Merson snubs Declan Rice, names best holding midfielder in the world

Daily Post 10 minutes 2 mins read

Arsenal legend, Paul Merson has named Chelsea midfielder, Moisés Caicedo as the best holding midfielder in the world after the Blues’ 5-1 win over Bournemouth.

Chelsea had endured a run of three consecutive Premier League matches without a victory. However, they bounced back in commanding fashion after the international break.

Goals from Morgan Rogers and Jordan Henderson gave Chelsea a two-goal lead within the first three minutes at Stamford Bridge, with João Pedro extending their advantage shortly after the restart.

Evanilson scored a consolation goal for Bournemouth, but further goals from João Pedro and Henderson ensured that Xabi Alonso’s men secured an emphatic victory in front of their home fans.

Despite the praise directed at Chelsea’s attacking capabilities, Merson expressed particular admiration for Caicedo’s performance during his first appearance of the season.

Speaking on Sky Sports, Merson said: “When you have Henderson and Caicedo in that position, they can simply execute their defensive obligations, enabling the remaining three players to concentrate on their attacking responsibilities.

“They should not concede too many goals or exhibit defensive deficiencies, given that they have these two individuals capable of stabilising the midfield, alongside three players of exceptional quality.

“I thought Caicedo and Henderson worked well together.

“Henderson has the experience, and Caicedo, for me, is the best holding midfield player in the world of football.

“So, for me, you get those two holding, and that’s your insurance policy. Just let the others go and play.”

Club captain, Reece James has featured regularly in central midfield so far this season but missed Saturday’s victory through injury.
