Former Super Eagles of Nigeria coach, Clemens Westerhof, has been hospitalised in the Netherlands after being diagnosed with colon cancer. His wife, Lilian, confirmed the development, saying the family was devastated by the diagnosis and appealing for prayers, love and support as the former coach battles the illness. According to reports, Westerhof has been in hospital since Wednesday, with the cancer diagnosis confirmed afterwards. “The doctor just told us he has colon cancer and we are all devastated,” Lilian said. “He is in a critical condition and emotional, talking about our two daughters. “He wants to live. We need help. We need prayers.” Lilian also disclosed that Westerhof is battling Alzheimer’s disease, adding that the family was going through a difficult period and was holding on to hope and faith. The family is also seeking to transfer Westerhof to a better-equipped hospital in either Amsterdam or Germany for further medical care. Westerhof coached Nigeria’s senior national team for five years, leading the Super Eagles to their first-ever FIFA World Cup appearance in 1994. He also guided Nigeria to victory at the 1994 Africa Cup of Nations, AFCON, ending the country’s 14-year wait for the continental title.
