KAMPALA, UGANDA — Former Vice President and Presidential Special Envoy Edward Kiwanuka Ssekandi has paid rich tribute to the late Col. (Rtd) George Wilson Kamya, describing him as a man of remarkable fortitude whose life was defined by integrity, faith, and the turbulent history of East Africa.
Ssekandi made the remarks while congratulating the Inspector General of Government (IGG), Hon. Beti Olive Kamya, and her family following the launch of her late father’s autobiography, Soldier of Faith.
In his message, Ssekandi commended the effort to document Col. Kamya’s legacy, ensuring his experiences and values remain preserved for posterity.
“He was a man of remarkable fortitude who navigated a complex era of East African history with absolute integrity and faith,” Ssekandi noted. He added that the autobiography offers future generations a rare window into the principles of a military leader who lived through pivotal periods in the region’s past.
“A Friend I Can Always Count On”
In a parallel tribute to Gen. Salim Saleh Akandwanaho, Ssekandi described the veteran general as “a friend I can always count on,” praising his generosity, patience, and commitment to supporting ordinary Ugandans.
The two tributes underscore Ssekandi’s focus on honoring individuals whose service has shaped Uganda and the wider East African region. For the former Vice President, personal memoirs and family recollections serve as critical supplements to official state records in capturing national history.
Honoring Beti Kamya’s Commitment
Ssekandi praised Hon. Beti Kamya and her family for their persistence in bringing her father’s memoirs into the public domain.
“Thank you for your resilience in ensuring his voice and legacy were not lost to time, but instead preserved to instruct and inspire future generations,” Ssekandi stated.
The publication places Soldier of Faith at the center of a broader national effort to encourage families to document the lives of Uganda’s foundational figures.
Bridging Generational Memories
Beyond celebrating a completed book, Ssekandi emphasized that Soldier of Faith bridges generational divides by connecting personal conviction with historical events. The memoir preserves fundamental values—fortitude, discipline, and spiritual faith—that shaped an earlier generation of leaders.
“Congratulations once again,” Ssekandi added, commending the family for transforming Col. Kamya’s memory into an enduring written record capable of guiding future generations across East Africa.
