Exiled Gen. Kayumba Nyamwasa Hits Back at Gen. Muhoozi Over RNC Link to Kabera Murder

Watchdog Uganda about 2 hours 3 mins read

KAMPALA | Exiled former Rwandan army chief and Rwanda National Congress (RNC) leader, Gen. Kayumba Nyamwasa, has fired back at Uganda’s Chief of Defence Forces, Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, after he linked elements of the RNC to the gruesome murder of former Rwandan soldier Robert Kabera in Mpigi District.

In a post on X on Sunday, Gen. Muhoozi said his office had not been notified about Kabera and alleged RNC involvement in the killing.

“I highly suspect that certain elements of Kayumba’s RNC were responsible. Are they retaliating for Kandiho’s arrest? We shall get to the truth,” Gen. Muhoozi wrote, in reference to the September 2026 arrest of retired Maj. Gen. Abel Kandiho, former head of Uganda’s military intelligence.

Kabera, popularly known as Sgt. Robert, a former Rwanda Defence Force (RDF) member, Army Jazz Band instructor and government critic who fled Rwanda in 2020, was found beheaded on October 17, 2026 in Luwala Village, Kamengo Sub-county, Mpigi.

Police have since opened investigations into the murder, while Human Rights Watch has called for a prompt, impartial and credible probe amid reports that Kabera had received threats prior to his death.

Nyamwasa: “We will fight”

Responding on X, Nyamwasa, who has lived in exile in South Africa for years, issued a strongly-worded rejoinder.

“#Muhoozi, you know that I am a full General, and I am among those who captured Uganda along with your Father. So if you want to launch a war against me, we will fight,” he posted.

In a follow-up post that included a screenshot of Gen. Muhoozi’s statement, Nyamwasa added:

“These words spoken by @mkainerugaba reached me and hurt me, but as a soldier (general), I cannot remain silent. I have a lot to say, and the time has come for me to reply so that Muhoozi knows exactly who I am to the country of Uganda.”

He tagged the Ministry of Defence and Veteran Affairs and the office of the Chief of Defence Forces.

Nyamwasa was born and raised in Uganda, joined the National Resistance Army (NRA) in 1986, later rose to become RDF Chief of Staff, before falling out with the Kigali government and co-founding the RNC. He has previously denied using Uganda as a base to destabilize Rwanda.

By Tuesday evening, no detailed statement had been released beyond the two posts, and Ugandan police had not publicly named any suspects in the Kabera murder case.

The allegations remain unproven as investigations continue.
