Each family of victims of the lingering communal conflict in Lamurde Local Government Area of Adamawa State has received a relief package of N5 million from the Adamawa State Government.
Governor Ahmadu Fintiri presented the cheques on Monday through his deputy, Professor Kaletapwa Farauta, telling the bereaved families that the intervention was aimed at supporting them and alleviating their hardship.
Farauta, who met with the families in Lamurde town, recalled that Governor Fintiri had visited the affected communities shortly after the crisis and promised financial support to the victims’ families.
“At the time we lost our people, the Governor visited the area and made a promise to support the families of the victims. Today, we are fulfilling that promise by presenting cheques to each next of kin,” Kaletapwa said.
The deputy governor appealed to residents of Lamurde Local Government Area to embrace peace, saying sustainable development can only thrive in a peaceful environment.
“There is nothing better than living peacefully with one another. Unless we learn to coexist in peace, development cannot take place,” she stressed.
Lamenting that many residents displaced by the crisis were still taking refuge in schools, Kaletapwa said, “On behalf of the governor, I appeal to everyone to be patient, tolerant, and committed to peaceful coexistence,” she added.
Speaking on behalf of the beneficiaries, Mr Safety Moses said the gesture would go a long way in restoring hope and improving the livelihoods of families affected by the loss of their loved ones.
DAILY POST reports that no fewer than 30 people died between December last year and April this year in bouts of violence linked to the long-running conflict between the Bachama and Chobo communities in Lamurde Local Government Area.
