Nigerian singer Tekno has shared his personal perspective on the influence of Afrobeat legend Fela Anikulapo-Kuti, revealing that he did not grow up listening to Fela’s music.
According to Tekno, his upbringing in Bauchi, where his father is Igbo and Yoruba was not commonly spoken around him, meant he had little exposure to Fela’s music while growing up.
“Fela was not my king, and he will never be my king. I grew up in Bauchi, my dad is Igbo, and no one around us spoke Yoruba. I didn’t listen to Fela growing up,” Tekno said.
The singer added that although his music is often associated with Afrobeat, the only song in his catalogue that he feels carries a sound similar to Fela’s style is “Rara.”
For Tekno, his biggest musical inspiration comes from another Nigerian highlife legend, Oliver De Coque, whom he proudly described as his king.
“Oliver De Coque is my king,” he stated.
