The Federal Ministry of Power, through the Transmission Company of Nigeria, TCN, in partnership with the Kano State Government, has commissioned four transmission substations, adding 544MW of wheeling capacity to Kano State’s power grid.

The substations are located at Walalambe, Kumbotso, Dakata and Dan-Agundi. Walalambe has a new 80MW-capacity substation with two 40MVA transformers, while Kumbotso has received 300MVA at the 330kV level and 100MVA transformers. Dakata and Dan-Agundi have each gained an additional 100MVA transformer at the 132kV level.

The commissioning was carried out by the Honourable Minister of Power, Joseph Tegbe, alongside the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Mahmuda Mamman; the Managing Director of TCN, Engr. Sule Abdulaziz; the Kano State Commissioner for Energy; and other dignitaries.

The projects are expected to strengthen bulk electricity supply to Kano’s industrial, commercial and residential areas, ease pressure on overloaded substations and create capacity to meet previously suppressed demand.

At Walalambe, six outgoing feeders will support electricity supply to the Tokarawa Industrial Area, the Eastern Bypass, Maiduguri Road, Hadejia Road and adjoining communities.

Lee Group, a major industrial enterprise, has been reconnected to the national grid after more than 30 years of operating off-grid. Meanwhile, the fire-damaged Dan-Agundi substation has regained substantial capacity to serve Kano’s ancient town, the Emir’s Palace and surrounding communities.

Together, the investments are expected to strengthen infrastructure for manufacturing, support small businesses, create employment opportunities and improve household welfare.

The projects underscore President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda and his determination to reset the power sector as a foundation for national development, while translating infrastructure investments into economic opportunities across the country.
