Nigeria’s Falconets begin their 2026 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup campaign on Monday when they take on Spain in a highly anticipated Group F opener at the Arena Sosnowiec in Poland.
The match, scheduled for 5pm Nigerian time, presents a stern early test for Moses Aduku’s side, with Spain regarded as one of the leading teams in the competition.
Nigeria come into the encounter with plenty of World Cup experience. The Falconets have featured at every edition of the tournament and have finished runners-up twice, in 2010 and 2014, but are still searching for their first world title.
Spain, meanwhile, are no strangers to success at this level. They won the tournament in 2022 and finished runners-up in 2024, making Monday’s encounter a major challenge for the Nigerians.
The Falconets have also shown encouraging form in their preparations, beating hosts Poland 1-0 in a pre-tournament friendly, with Mary Mamudu scoring the decisive goal.
Coach Moses Aduku has described the encounter as a match his team will approach like a cup final, highlighting the importance of starting the tournament strongly.
With China PR and New Caledonia completing Group F, a positive result against Spain could provide Nigeria with an important platform for the rest of the group stage.
