Finnish Court Reduces Simon Ekpa’s Jail Term From Six Years To Four

InformationNG about 1 hour 1 mins read

A Finnish Court of Appeal has reduced the prison sentence of pro-Biafran agitator Simon Ekpa from six years to four years while upholding his conviction on terrorism-related charges.

According to Finnish public broadcaster Yle, the court upheld his conviction for participating in a terrorist organisation and publicly inciting crimes for terrorist purposes.

The charges were linked to his alleged activities aimed at establishing an independent Biafran state in southeastern Nigeria.

The court reduced the sentence after considering the circumstances surrounding his activities, noting that the situation in the region resembled a civil war but did not meet the legal definition of one.

Ekpa had argued that his involvement in the region’s political crisis was not driven by terrorist intent, while the prosecutor had appealed the original sentence, arguing that six years in prison was insufficient given the seriousness of the offences.
