The Peoples Redemption Party (PRP) has raised concerns over the simultaneous absence of President Bola Tinubu and Vice President Kashim Shettima from Nigeria, saying the situation raises serious questions about who is currently in charge of the country.
The National Chairman of the party, Dr Hakeem Baba-Ahmed, raised the concern on Monday in Abuja while speaking at the first national summit of opposition political leaders.
Baba-Ahmed said it was unusual for both the President and his deputy to be outside the country at the same time, questioning the implications for the running of government.
“Who is in charge now?” the PRP chairman asked.
“This is the first time in Nigeria’s history that both the President and Vice President are out of the country at the same time, considering that they are the two highest-ranking officials in the executive arm of government.”
The opposition leader also questioned the circumstances surrounding Tinubu’s latest foreign trip, alleging that the President travelled abroad amid expectations over the possible release of documents concerning him by the United States Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI).
Baba-Ahmed alleged that Tinubu’s trip was an emergency move intended to prevent the release of the documents.
