Residents and commuters in Agbarho, Delta State, are appealing for urgent government intervention after flash floods cut off a section of the East-West Road at Oviri Junction.
The flooding has triggered heavy traffic congestion, disrupted vehicular movement, and submerged several homes in the community.
The affected residents are calling for immediate repairs to the damaged section of the highway, with a larger culvert or bridge proposed as a permanent solution to the recurring flooding.
The development followed days of heavy rainfall, which have affected several communities and road networks across the state.
At Oviri Junction, a section of the East-West Road was damaged after floodwater overwhelmed and collapsed the existing culvert.
Both carriageways were also rendered impassable, leaving only a narrow portion of the road for vehicles to navigate.
The situation resulted in long queues and stranded commuters.
Some motorists and passengers who were unable to remain in the traffic resorted to walking across the flooded section to continue their journeys.
However, residents said the rising water posed a serious safety risk, particularly for pedestrians attempting to cross the affected portion of the road.
The flooding has also affected homes around the area, with some residents forced to abandon their houses as water levels continued to rise.
Residents and road users urged the relevant authorities, particularly the Federal Government, to intervene without delay.
They called for the collapsed culvert to be replaced with a larger drainage structure or a bridge that can adequately accommodate the volume of water and allow it to flow freely.
According to the residents, a permanent solution would not only restore movement along the East-West Road but also help prevent the repeated flooding that has continued to disrupt lives and economic activities in the area.
Several properties have been affected by flash floods in different parts of the country.
In Rivers State, several parts of Port Harcourt, Rivers State, were affected by flooding following about three days of persistent rainfall across the city.
Floodwaters were observed in areas including New G.R.A., sections of the Eliozu–G.U. Ake Road, Eneka, Elimgbu, Odili Road, SARS Road and parts of Rupokwu, among others.
The prolonged rainfall left stagnant water in some areas, while other parts of the city recorded significant flooding, raising concerns among residents.
Around the Eneka axis, some residents had their homes flooded, as videos circulating on social media showed some residents crying and appealing for help.
