Former National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Abdullahi Ganduje, has said friction between incumbents and incoming governors is denying Nigerians good governance.
Ganduje said this friction has made new governors to set aside programmes of their predecessors.
The former governor of Kano State spoke during the Forum of Former Deputy Governors of Nigeria Annual Conference in Abuja.
Ganduje said: "Some of our national leaders who were nationalistic in outlook became tribalistic in attitude because political parties were based on ethnicity.
"As time goes, we should come together and believe in Nigeria, convert our diversity into an asset rather than a liability.
"When we are talking of sustainable development, what are the problems between an incumbent and predecessor in our politics today? What is the problem between a governor who has exited and a new governor who has taken over?
"You find out that there is friction even if they belong to the same political party, what more if they don't belong to the same political party.
"That question is denying us continued governance because a governor has done a lot of work, some finished, some ongoing, which is natural.
"When a new governor comes, anything by the former governor is set aside, any programme they would attempt to reverse it, so you will find that there is no continuity.
"Continuity leads to consolidation and this leads to sustainable development. So I think that this is an issue that we must look at.
"Are our institutions really strong enough to sustain democracy? We need sustainable democracy in Nigeria, let us look at the executive, legislature, judiciary, non-governmental organizations. Are all these strong institutions that would move Nigeria forward?"
