Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, has thanked the people of the state for their continued support, saying the large crowds witnessed at project commissioning ceremonies across the state are a demonstration of their confidence in his administration.
Fubara spoke on Wednesday during the commissioning of the 14.5-kilometre Agba-Ndele-Abua/Odual Road and river-crossing bridge, which connects communities in Emohua and Obua/Odual Local Government Areas.
The governor said the turnout at the various commissioning ceremonies had been overwhelming, adding that he would ordinarily have expected the people to distance themselves from his administration in view of the political developments in the state.
According to him, their continued presence and support, despite the circumstances, showed genuine love for his leadership.
Fubara pledged to continue appreciating and reciprocating the people’s support until the final day of his tenure.
He also said the infrastructure projects being delivered by his administration would give APC candidates an advantage when they campaign in the state ahead of the 2027 elections.
The governor explained that the impact of the projects would give the party tangible achievements to highlight when seeking the people’s support.
According to him, “what we have done here today will make it easy for our candidate who will be representing us in the forthcoming election. When he comes here to campaign, especially in Emohua, he will tell them my party did this and my party did that. So, it is going to be easy for us to win elections here.”
On the project, Fubara clarified that the road and bridge were not awarded at the same time, noting that the bridge was initiated before the immediate past administration.
He said he decided to complete the bridge because of his belief that government is a continuum and that projects capable of improving the lives of the people should be completed irrespective of the administration that initiated them.
The governor said an inspection of the deplorable Abua road had shown the need for an alternative route that would shorten travel time and improve movement between Abua/Odual and the East-West Road.
He added that the bridge would strengthen connectivity while also helping to tackle security challenges previously experienced along the corridor.
Fubara said the need for an accessible road to complement the bridge subsequently led to the construction of the 14.5-kilometre Agba-Ndele section.
He commended the contractor for understanding the administration’s vision for the project, stressing that his priority was not simply to execute projects but to deliver infrastructure capable of adding value and improving the lives of the people.
According to him, the road and bridge would ease the difficulties faced by residents using the old Abua road while creating greater opportunities for economic activities in the benefiting communities.
The governor particularly appreciated the people of Ndele for their cooperation with the contractor and urged them to take ownership of the project and protect the infrastructure.
Fubara, however, expressed concern over reported damage to parts of the bridge by vessels passing underneath it. He said the state government had spent additional money to repair the affected sections.
He consequently charged the chairmen of Emohua and Abua/Odual Local Government Areas with the responsibility of protecting the bridge and preventing further damage.
The governor urged the two council chairmen to collaborate with security agencies and establish local security arrangements to prevent activities that could result in the destruction of the bridge.
