Fubara Promises 700 Shops At Creek Road Market By January 2027

The Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, says the first phase of the Creek Road Market reconstruction in Old Port Harcourt Township will provide about 700 shops for traders, ease traffic congestion, and improve trading conditions.

Governor Fubara stated this during an inspection of the ongoing project, where he expressed satisfaction with the quality and progress of work.

He said the new market would accommodate wet and dry goods traders, particularly women currently selling along Creek Road and adjoining streets, allowing for the rehabilitation of surrounding roads.

“With 700 shops, it is clear that our women who are trading along the Creek Road will be relocated, and we’ll have freer access along the road,” the Governor said.

Fubara described Old Port Harcourt Township as a historic part of the city, home to elderly residents and the original inhabitants, whom he referred to as the “Aborigines.”

He stressed the need to restore the area’s cleanliness and dignity, noting that street trading had extended beyond Creek Road to other roads in the township.

“It’s important we tidy up this road so that these traders can evacuate the major road, and the road will be free,” he said.

The Governor assured that his administration would provide the necessary support to ensure the project’s timely completion, adding that the contractor had promised delivery by the end of January 2027.

The project forms part of the Fubara administration’s urban renewal efforts to improve commercial activities, ease traffic movement and create a cleaner environment in Port Harcourt.
