Depot owners such as Opitma, Emedab, and Parker sell the petrol at N1200 to N1225 per liter, respectively, up from N1080. \u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Meanwhile, DAILY POST reports fuel retail pump Natural gas remains Nigeria’s transition fuel and our objective under the Renewed Hope Agenda is clear. We have committed ourselves to transforming this abundant resource into industrial growth, expanding energy access, employment opportunities, cleaner cooking solutions, increased domestic utilisation and greater prosperity for our people,” he said.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>According to the minister, decarbonisation has evolved beyond an environmental obligation into an economic necessity as investors increasingly consider carbon performance in making investment decisions.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>“Today, decarbonisation has become far more than an environmental obligation. It is now an economic imperative, an investment imperative and a competitiveness imperative. If we are to remain a preferred destination for responsible energy investment, we must continue building institutions, policies and regulatory systems that inspire confidence while preserving our sovereign rights to utilise our natural resources for national growth,” Ekpo stated.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>He reaffirmed Nigeria’s support for global efforts to reduce methane emissions from fossil fuel operations, maintaining that climate ambition must progress alongside economic development. Ekpo insisted that no developing nation should be compelled to choose between poverty reduction and environmental protection.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>“Our objective is clear. Climate ambition must go hand in hand with development ambition. No country should be forced to choose between lifting its people out of poverty and protecting the environment. 2026.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>This came as figures released by the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC) differed from those of the National Oil Spill Detection and Response Agency (NOSDRA) on the volume of gas flared during the period.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>While the NUPRC recorded 17.6 million standard cubic feet (MMSCF) of gas flared in May 2026, NOSDRA put the figure at 30.7 million standard cubic feet (MSCF).\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Data obtained from NOSDRA’s latest report showed that the monetary value of the gas flared during the period stood at $107.5 million.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>According to the agency, the defaulting companies, including International Oil Companies (IOCs), are liable to penalties amounting to $61.4 million.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Providing a breakdown of flaring across oilfields, NOSDRA disclosed that gas flaring by companies operating onshore rose by 62.3 per cent to 22.3 MSCF, compared to 8.4 MSCF flared offshore.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>The agency further stated that the volume of gas flared during the review period translated into carbon dioxide emissions estimated at 1.6 million tonnes.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>NOSDRA lamented that despite efforts to curb the practice, gas flaring has persisted in Nigeria since the 1950s, releasing carbon dioxide and other harmful gases into the atmosphere.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>The Federal Government has repeatedly stated its commitment to the “Decade of Gas” initiative.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Under the initiative, launched in 2021, Nigeria aims to become a gas-powered economy by 2030 through improved power supply, industrial utilisation and increased gas exports.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>A government report obtained by Vanguard stated that “increasing gas utilisation for power generation and incentivising investments in the gas value chain” remain top priorities.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Vanguard gathered that gas flaring has remained persistently high despite increased investments in the gas sector, suggesting that inflows into the industry have not translated into proportional improvements in gas production and utilisation.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Checks by Vanguard also indicated that Nigeria’s inability to consistently generate more than 4,000 megawatts (MW) of electricity for households and businesses is partly linked to inadequate gas supply to Electricity Generation Companies (GenCos).\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Meanwhile, the Renevlyn Development Initiative, RDI, has urged the Federal Government to impose an outright ban on gas flaring, arguing that oil Nigeria (PETROAN) yesterday called on the federal government to immediately restore the country’s state-owned refineries to full commercial operation, arguing that a competitive refining landscape is critical to ensuring price stability, strengthening energy security and reducing pressure on the naira.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>The association also urged the government to guarantee adequate crude oil supply to all domestic refiners, saying Nigeria’s downstream petroleum market should not depend on the fortunes or pricing decisions of a single refinery.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>In a statement yesterday, PETROAN President, Dr. Billy Gillis-Harry, said while the association supports the deregulation of the downstream sector and respects the commercial decisions of all licensed marketers earn revenue in naira and would be exposed to exchange rate volatility if forced to source foreign exchange to purchase products, with the attendant impact on pump Saudi Arabia’s Aramco is, by any measure, one of the most efficient refining operations in the world, and yet the Kingdom has continued investing in diversified downstream capacity domestically and through joint ventures abroad, precisely because efficiency at scale does not substitute for the disciplining effect of multiple suppliers competing for the same customer.
