Full List: Countries that have won back-to-back World Cups

Winning the FIFA World Cup is the ultimate achievement in football. Defending that title, however, has proven even more difficult.

In the tournament’s nearly century-long history, only two countries have successfully retained the World Cup trophy, while several others have come agonisingly close.

As the 2026 FIFA World Cup approaches, defending champions Argentina have the chance to join one of football’s most exclusive clubs. Here’s a look at the only nations to win consecutive World Cup titles—and those who narrowly missed out.

1. Italy (1934 & 1938) – The First Repeat Champions

Italy became the first country to successfully defend the FIFA World Cup, dominating international football throughout the 1930s.

The Azzurri lifted their maiden World Cup trophy on home soil in 1934, defeating Czechoslovakia 2-1 after extra time in the final.

Four years later, under legendary coach Vittorio Pozzo, Italy arrived at the 1938 tournament in France as one of the world’s strongest teams. They defeated Norway, hosts France and Brazil before overcoming Hungary 4-2 in the final, with Silvio Piola scoring twice.

Italy appeared capable of winning a third straight title, but the outbreak of World War II led to the cancellation of the 1942 and 1946 World Cups, ending their golden era before they had the chance.

2. Brazil (1958 & 1962) – The Birth of a Football Dynasty

More than two decades after Italy’s achievement, Brazil became the second—and so far last—nation to retain the World Cup.

After heartbreak in the famous 1950 final, Brazil bounced back spectacularly in Sweden in 1958. The tournament introduced the world to a 17-year-old Pelé, who starred alongside Garrincha, Didi, Vavá and Mário Zagallo as Brazil defeated Sweden 5-2 in the final.

Brazil successfully defended their crown in Chile four years later despite losing Pelé to injury during the group stage. Garrincha inspired the team to another final, where they defeated Czechoslovakia 3-1 to become back-to-back world champions.

Their bid for a historic third consecutive title ended at the 1966 World Cup after a surprise group-stage exit.
