The Gambia Democratic Congress of Mamma Kandeh has said it welcomed the resignation of its administrative secretary Ebrima Nyang who quit over the party’s alliance with the ruling NPP.
Nyang resigned on Sunday insisting that he will not support ‘an alliance that prioritises power over progress’.
He further explained that his resignation stems from the profound conviction that GDC’s alliance with the NPP may inadvertently undermine the principles of presidential term limits which he considers a cornerstone of democratic governance.
“This alliance seems to contradict the very essence of term limits, potentially paving the way for self-perpetuating rule in The Gambia,” Nyang said in his resignation letter. He added,”By choosing this path, I aim to uphold my integrity and reputation, ensuring that my actions remain a testament to the principles I hold dear”.
The GDC in a response signed by senior administrative secretary Samba Baldeh, accepted Nyang’s decision and thanked him for his service.
The GDC paid tribute to Nyang describing him as loyal, diligent and principle.
“His efforts in advancing the cause of the GDC will always be remembered and appreciated,” Baldeh wrote.
He said while the party regrets Nyang’s departure, it respects his decision and wishes him well in all his future endeavours.
