Gen Muhoozi Releases Retired Brig Gen Bakahumura, Vows to Repair Broken Relations

KAMPALA — Chief of Defence Forces Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba has ordered the immediate release of retired Brigadier General Charles Bakahumura from military detention, saying the decision is part of an effort to repair relations that were broken in the past.

In a post on his official X account on Saturday, 31 October 2026, Gen Muhoozi stated: “I have decided to release General Bakahumura from detention today. We shall repair the relations that were broken in the past.”

Bakahumura, a 35-year veteran of the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF), was among 19 general officers formally retired on 20 August 2026 at a ceremony at State House Entebbe presided over by President Yoweri Museveni. He was taken into detention in early September 2026, shortly after his retirement.

During his service, Bakahumura held senior appointments including Chief of Military Intelligence (CMI, now Defence Intelligence and Security) from 2012 to 2017, and Chief of Logistics and Engineering for seven years—the longest tenure in that position. He later served as Uganda’s Defence Attaché to Turkey. He holds a Master’s degree in Defence Studies from King’s College London and other qualifications from Makerere University.

The announcement comes days after the CDF made a similar decision regarding another retired senior officer who had also been held in military detention. At the time of publication, the UPDF had not issued a formal statement on the release, and military spokespersons were unavailable for comment.
