The Gambian team of athletes and officials at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, on Sunday joined government officials and members of the Gambian community in Scotland on Sunday to celebrate Gambia Day, a vibrant event held on the sidelines of the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games.
The celebration was attended by the minister of youth and sports Bakary Badjie, High Commissioner Fatoumatta Bom Bensouda, GNOC president Bai Dodou Jallow, among others.
The event showcased Gambian culture through traditional music, dance and community engagement, and mobilised support for the Gambian team at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games.
The GNOC president Bai Dodou Jallow thanked the Gambian community for turning out in large numbers to support the team and praised the athletes for their commitment and resilience, urging them to continue competing with determination and to uphold the values of excellence, friendship and respect throughout the Games.
In his turn, Sports Minister Badjie reaffirmed government’s unwavering commitment to the development of sports and commended the athletes for proudly representing the nation on the international stage and acknowledged the important role of the Gambian diaspora in promoting national unity and supporting the country’s sporting ambitions.
The Gambia’s High Commissioner to the United Kingdom, Fatoumatta Bom Bensouda, welcomed the Gambian team and members of the community, describing the celebration as a testament to the unity and patriotism of Gambians abroad. She encouraged the athletes to remain focused and continue serving as worthy ambassadors of The Gambia while assuring them of the High Commission’s continued support during their stay in the United Kingdom.
The celebration also featured cultural performances, entertainment and interactions between athletes and members of the Gambian community.
