Prophet Israel Ford has responded to criticism following his recent announcement of his second marriage in church, addressing questions about the biblical instruction that church leaders should be “the husband of one wife.”
The cleric pushed back against those questioning his decision, arguing that the scripture is often misunderstood and applied too broadly by Christians.
According to Ford, the biblical requirement is specifically directed at certain church leadership positions rather than every member of the congregation.
“One, I’m not a bishop nor am I a deacon. Two, if that’s actually what that meant, then that would only pertain to those who are on that level of leadership,” he explained.
Ford further argued that how people interpret certain Bible passages is influenced by the teachings they have received over the years. He pointed to the scripture instructing women to remain silent in church, noting that some biblical instructions are understood in their historical and cultural context.
“And once I got that understanding, I was able to even go to the chapter before in chapter two where it says women should be silent in the church. Well, I was able to get over that one. And I knew that that was a cultural thing. So why can we not get over the other one, which is a bishop? It’s cultural,” he stated.
The prophet maintained that the same contextual understanding should be considered when discussing the biblical qualification concerning a church leader being the husband of one wife.
However, Ford acknowledged that many people see his explanation as an attempt to justify his decision, making him less willing to keep defending his position to those who have already made up their minds.
