SOKOTO — Gorau village in Goronyo Local Government Area of Sokoto State was plunged into fresh mourning on Wednesday after armed bandits invaded the community, killing four residents, shooting seven others and abducting four people.
The attack came only days after a devastating boat accident at the Gorau crossing point reportedly claimed the lives of 65 passengers, including women and children.
Residents said the armed men stormed the community and opened fire, throwing the area into panic as residents fled for safety.
Four people were reportedly killed during the attack, while seven others sustained gunshot wounds and were rushed to hospital for treatment.
The bandits also abducted four residents and fled the community with their victims, heightening fears among families over their safety.
The latest attack has compounded the grief of residents who are still struggling to come to terms with the boat tragedy that claimed dozens of lives and left families mourning across Gorau and neighbouring communities.
The successive tragedies have heightened concerns over the vulnerability of residents in remote communities in Goronyo, many of whom depend on farming, fishing, transportation and other activities for their livelihoods.
Residents are now calling for urgent and sustained security intervention to protect communities in the area and prevent further attacks.
The incident is also expected to renew calls for the deployment of more security personnel and operational resources to vulnerable communities across Goronyo and other parts of Sokoto State.
Meanwhile, the humanitarian impact of the recent boat tragedy continues to weigh heavily on the community, with families having lost breadwinners, women and children.
As the injured victims receive treatment and families await information on the abducted residents, the latest attack has further deepened the sense of insecurity and despair in Gorau.
The development has once again underscored the precarious situation facing rural communities in the state, where residents are increasingly exposed to both insecurity and other life-threatening hazards.
