Governor Hyacinth Alia has inaugurated a 12-member Task Force to oversee the commencement of operations at the University of Agriculture, Science and Technology, Ihugh (UAST), describing the institution as a major investment in Benue State’s future.

The inauguration ceremony took place on Wednesday at the Old Banquet Hall, Government House, Makurdi, according to a statement issued by the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Sir Tersoo Kula.

The committee is chaired by Prof. Leonard Shirgba, while the Registrar of UAST, Dr. Johnson Echor, will serve as secretary.

Addressing members of the Task Force, Governor Alia said the university was established to become a centre of excellence in agriculture, science, technology and entrepreneurship, with a focus on equipping young people with practical skills and innovative capacities needed for economic advancement.

He noted that the institution aligns with his administration’s goal of building a knowledge-based economy that leverages technology, innovation and research to create sustainable opportunities for development.

The governor explained that the university would contribute significantly to strengthening Benue’s status as Nigeria’s food basket through research-driven agricultural practices, value addition and modern farming techniques.

Alia tasked the committee with laying the foundation for the institution’s successful launch by ensuring that critical structures, policies, systems and resources are put in place.

“The University is more than a physical institution. It is a strategic investment in the future of Benue State and in the dreams of our young people.

“We are building a solution-driven institution that will produce graduates who will create jobs, establish businesses and contribute meaningfully to the growth of our economy,” he stated.

The governor expressed confidence in the expertise and integrity of the Task Force members and urged them to carry out their responsibilities with commitment, professionalism and patriotism.

He also expressed optimism that the university would emerge as a leading hub for academic excellence, innovation, entrepreneurship and impactful research in Nigeria and beyond.

Governor Alia wished the committee members success, wisdom and divine guidance as they begin work on the establishment of the institution.
