Government has signed a Shs232 billion contract with Egypt’s SAMCO National Construction Company Ltd for the construction of a passenger terminal at Kabalega International Airport in Hoima District, as Uganda steps up preparations for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
The eight-month contract period places the project among the key infrastructure developments whose timely completion is considered important as Uganda prepares to co-host the continental football tournament alongside Kenya and Tanzania.
During the contract signing ceremony, the Minister of Works and Transport, Hon. Fred Byamukama, challenged the Egyptian contractor to deliver the project within the agreed timeframe while maintaining high construction standards.
Byamukama also cautioned against corruption, emphasising the need for transparency, accountability and value for money throughout the implementation of the project.
He reaffirmed Government’s commitment to meeting its contractual obligations to ensure that the contractor receives the necessary support to execute and complete the works on schedule.
Egyptian Ambassador to Uganda, H.E. Sherif Mohamed Abdellattif Elgammal, commended Uganda for what he described as a transparent and merit-based procurement process that resulted in the selection of SAMCO National Construction Company Ltd.
The Ambassador also expressed confidence in the Egyptian company’s capacity to undertake the assignment and deliver the project in accordance with the agreed requirements.
The passenger terminal is expected to strengthen Kabalega International Airport’s capacity to handle passenger traffic as Uganda expands its aviation infrastructure to support economic activities in the Albertine region.
The airport is strategically positioned to serve the oil and gas industry in the Albertine Graben, while improving access for investors, business travellers and tourists visiting western Uganda.
Its development is also part of broader efforts to improve the country’s transport infrastructure, facilitate trade and investment, and strengthen Uganda’s capacity to receive international visitors.
The latest contract comes as Uganda, Kenya and Tanzania intensify preparations to host AFCON 2027, a major continental sporting event expected to attract football teams, officials, supporters and visitors from across Africa and beyond.
With an eight-month completion timeline, the contractor will be expected to maintain progress and adhere to the agreed construction schedule to ensure the facility is ready within the stipulated period.
The project also underscores the growing infrastructure and economic cooperation between Uganda and Egypt, with the involvement of an Egyptian construction company further strengthening bilateral relations between the two countries.
