We are of the opinion that our young ones do not deserve this punishment. (NYSC) members travelling to their orientation camps has triggered fresh calls for the Federal Government to overhaul the transportation and security arrangements for young graduates deployed across the country for national service.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The call came as the 20 prospective corps members, who were abducted in Imo State, returned safely to Ibadan on Thursday after seven days in captivity and were taken to the Department of State Services (DSS) headquarters in the Aleshinloye area of the city for debriefing.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The mother of one of the rescued corps members, Faith Felicia Abiala, said the incident had exposed the dangers faced by young graduates travelling long distances by road to fulfil their national service obligations.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Abiala, who described her daughter’s safe return as a moment of overwhelming relief, urged the government to provide stronger security arrangements for corps members travelling to their states of deployment or consider transporting them by air.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">“My advice to the government is that when Corps members are posted to their service states, they should ensure proper security arrangements, or allow them to travel by air to avoid these kinds of dangerous road journeys,” she said.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The mother recalled the emotional trauma that followed the abduction of her daughter, saying she was so devastated when she received the news that she could not eat.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">“I cannot recount all the tears and sorrow, but I give thanks to God that I am seeing her alive today. On the day she was taken, I was so devastated I couldn’t even eat, but today my heart is filled with joy,” Abiala said.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She also commended the DSS and the security teams from Oyo and Imo states for their efforts in securing the victims’ return.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">“I thank God, and I thank the DSS officials—they really tried! The team from Oyo State and the team from Imo State, they really tried and stood by us until our children came out safe and sound,” she said.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Another relative of one of the victims, Alhaja Alimot Akande described their release as a major relief after days of uncertainty.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">“It is good news! Good news! Good news!” she said.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She said the confirmation of the victims’ release finally enabled their families to sleep peacefully after days of anguish.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">“Ah! Immediately I heard they were released yesterday, I slept soundly!” Akande said.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The abductors had reportedly demanded N50 million for each of the 20 victims, amounting to N1 billion, before the demand was allegedly reduced to N5 million per victim, bringing the total to N100 million.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The parents had earlier visited the private residence of the Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Rashidi Ladoja, in Ibadan, seeking his intervention in securing the release of their children.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Oyo State Commissioner of Police, Olugbenga Abimbola, and the Aseyin of Iseyinland, Oba Sefiu Adeyeri, were also involved in efforts to secure the victims’ release.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Olubadan subsequently announced the freedom of the prospective corps members after receiving confirmation from Imo State Governor, Hope Uzodinma.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">“The kidnapped graduates have been released. We asked whether the amount was for all of them, but they insisted that no, it was for each person. Later, we started begging them to take N500,000. But they said no and started scaring us,” she said in Yoruba.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">“Three days ago, they called and said we should pay N15 million. We kept begging them that all we had was N5.5 million. They said no and insisted on N6 million. So, it’s that N6 million we paid.”\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The woman said the abductors asked the parents of the victims to send representatives to meet them in Ibadan as part of arrangements for the ransom payment.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">“They called all the parents of all the victims. Twenty of them are in the bush. They then asked us to send three persons each to meet with them in Ibadan. My husband and my son’s elder brother went.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">“When they got to the meeting place, they asked them to send the money to an account and that when they got to Imo state, they should change the money into dollars.”\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She said her elder son was among those who met the abductors and delivered the ransom.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">“It is not rumours. They have all been released and sent to us. His brother is among the people who went to meet with the abductors three days ago. They left with the ransom,” she said.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">“It was the brother who called us this evening to say that they had handed the ransom to the kidnappers and that they had released our son. I couldn’t sleep either. But I was relieved when I heard they had been released. Police, Audu Bosso, has denied knowledge of any ransom payment before the release of the 20 abducted corps members and one other who regained freedom from their abductors in the state.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Bosso, who denied the rumours during an interview with Channels Television on Thursday, said the kidnappers succumbed to pressure from security agencies who combed the forest during a rescue operation.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>According to him, the released victims were receiving attention at the office of the Department of State Services, DSS.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>DAILY POST recalls that the prospective National Youth Service Corps, NYSC, members and one other individual, were abducted along the Owerri-Onitsha Road in the state on October 1 while travelling from Ibadan, Oyo State, to NYSC orientation camps in Abia and Akwa Ibom states.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>After the kidnap, security agencies launched a coordinated search-and-rescue operation to locate the victims and their abductors.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>The Imo State Police Command had earlier said its operatives located the kidnappers’ camp through drone surveillance but were unable to immediately enter the location because it was reportedly mined with improvised explosive devices, IEDs.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>The police later deployed additional operational assets as efforts intensified to reach the victims.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>The abduction created worry among the victims’ families following reports that the abductors demanded N50 million for each victim.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Police had earlier confirmed that 10 victims were rescued following the attack, while efforts continued to locate the remaining abductees.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>The latest development brings an end to the ordeal of the 20 corps members and the other abducted victim, who have now been reunited with safety and are receiving medical attention in Owerri.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>The victims were, however, released from the Amakohia-Ubi forest in Owerri West Local Government Area of the state on Wednesday following a coordinated operation involving security agencies.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp>\u003Ca
